1. AMEN! I spoke with a Cantwell campaign leader that I know
...and said, after voting for Alito, how do you expect me to support her?

She had no answer. She asked Maria, and has received no response!!!

I hate Cantwell, really. She's awful.

She's only marginally better than a republican.

Go Mark!

2. It's a lie to say Cantwell voted
for Alito. Conflating voting for cloture and voting against Alito is fundamentally dishonest. And I have no dog in this fight. I'm not from Washington and I've not been favorably impressed with Cantwell; just a stickler for accuracy.

4. This is true but...
voting against Alito and for cloture is nothing but political theater. If she was half as opposed to Alito as her form letter suggested she was, she would have voted against cloture. This isn't the only beef that people have with Cantwell, just the most recent, highest profile one...

5. Voting against the filibuster was a vote for Alito
Once cloture was passed, Alito was assured of sitting next to Scalia.

6. Well, I'm happy for your clarification, though calling it a 'lie' is a bit
strong.

Follow my logic if you will:

Dems, the minority, have 45 votes in the senate. Cloture requires 60 votes. If 40 Dems had confronted the Senate, Alito might not have made it (MIGHT not). This was the ONLY chance the dems had of even making an impression.

Cantwell, who spoke against Alito, did not think his nomination was worth a filibuster. So, Cantwell, in effect, says that, while she doesn't like Alito, he's definitly Supreme Court material.

Now, if you read anything about Alito, you'd know that he is an idealogue who does not fit into a 'mainstream' Supreme Court.

Cantwell could have voted against cloture and Alito still would have been appointed. Therefore, she must have done this to win conservative votes in WA (my home state).

Is it enough to speak against and vote against Alito, but do nothing to stop his nomination? Moreover, is this honestly a vote AGAINST Alito, knowing full well that you're doing nothing to stop him?

I suggest that Cantwell voted FOR Alito, in effect. And, I can report to you that most of her campaign staff in WA feels the same way - as do most of the Dems in the state house.

I am happy to stand corrected in your point of clarification regarding the difference between a cloture vote and a consent vote. I am also confident in my protrayal of Cantwell's vote and it's real impact, as well as reaction to her betrayal.

Thanks for your note!

So you ain't no activists just got opinions and in that climate i think that a Cantwell can do whatever she wants cuz you don't really see that unity is the key to pushing wafflers out of office but yer a waffler yerself really. no descendent of the wobbly past. Theres no sales tax here folks so theres no infrastructure so you feel richer too not like a republican from bellevue but what's the difference. ergo Cantwell=Rossi.

8. I'm sure this issue has already been decided for us...
Check out this little nugget of info from this thread I just read... http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2460894&mesg_id=2460928

"Mark Crispin Miller (from his blog):
http://markcrispinmiller.blogspot.com/2005_08_07_markcr...

"I was at a private house party on August 2nd in Georgia with Senators Reid, Schumer and Pryor.

And the grand DLC plan is simple for 2006 - no DEM primaries. They plan to choose the DLC candidate and force all others out of the race. Just like they did in PA with Casey.

The exact Schumer (DSCC Chair) quote is:
"We are no longer letting Democrats get in a circle and shoot each other. We are going to intervene if any one Democrat attacks another. We are doing that in states where there are primaries. ......this always happens in the primaries, people throw up the cards and see where they land. No more. We're finding the best candidates in every one of the seats where republicans are vunerable. "

So, bye bye primaries, folks. The good DLC will be choosing our candidates from here on out.
"
