Hackett-Brown Timeline of Candidacies. Who's on 1st?
Did Hackett declare his candidacy 1st? Did Dem leadership ask him to run for the Senate? Does anyone have the information/timeline with links?

TIA

1. You can find it in the garbage can of irrelevancy.
What difference does it make? We have our candidate and ought to be focused on removing corporate and fundy apologist Mike DeWine from the Senate. We need five or six seats for a majority and infighting will not help that already ambitious goal.

3. this help?

<For months, the Democratic National Committee, and the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee chair, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), have been working behind the scenes to undermine Hackett's campaign in favor of Rep. Sherrod Brown. When Hackett announced his intention to run, he met with party leaders, and with Ohio Rep. Sherrod Brown, and won a commitment from Brown not to enter into a primary fight for the Democratic senate nomination. Later, the party leadership undercut him and had Brown go back on his promise, forcing a primary battle. The undermining effort continued and Hackett finally decided Monday he didn't want the fight.>

If Ds keep undermining him because of this ill-conceived hero worship of Hacket, then you are right.

15. 1. No it doesn't. 2. So what?
Sherrod has charisma. Hackett (who I will remind everyone is no longer a candidate) has bluntness. Some people appreciate that. Many do not. Sherrod is an engaging speaker that makes the audience what to trust him.

Most people will never hear either candidate make a stump speech. Consequently, advertising is far more important than charisma. Jesus, how much charisma does Bush have or Taft or DeWine? Pretty much none and yet they have done very well politically. Except for the presidency which has a lot more exposure than other offices, charisma is almost irrelevant.

Fortunately, Brown has a lot of support in the north where the bulk of Ohio's population and nearly all of the Dem. base is.

Sun Tsu wrote in the Art of War never to attack the enemy's strength, but only his weakness. MacArthur rephrased this as, "Hit 'em where they ain't." Hamilton Co. Rs and right-to-lifers will never support us.

I don't know what an aparatchick is, so I cannot comment.

21. Many, many reasons.
State issue 1 turned out the Fundies.

Blackwell and Diebold screwed around with the voters.

Kerry was damn confusing, had no clear message on security.

Bush ran an effective fear-based campaign. People fell for it.

Kerry painted to look like a radical, was not successful in counteracting it.

Bush was probably bugging his phone.

Bush was nominated a month later than JK and therefore had more Fed. $$ at the end of the campaign.

Kerry was too nice. Brought boxing gloves to a gun fight, so to speak.

Corporate media.

26. "Hit 'em where they ain't."
That was baseball player Willie Keeler. He also said "learn what pitch you hit good and wait for that pitch".

MacArthur does have some great ones though

"aparatchick" - usually means party flunky.

9. This is not about Brown!
This about the process and did the "good old boy network" hamstring Hackett?
You know, "Run back and run for the house .... you haven't kissed the right
ass and been around long enough to run for senate."

Imagine the temerity of Paul, a smart talented straight talking person who is
highly successful in his own life wants to run for Senate and doesn't want to
go back on his word ....... We sure don't need people like him in the party.

12. This is about wanting to win in the Senate.
Frankly, Hackett was damaged goods and he damaged it himself. He lost to Schmidt (NOT Portman). He has no money, no political base, no experience running a state-wide campaign and frankly his peevish manner has greatly reduced the respect I once had for him. Frankly, it was fanciful even to enter this race. His resignation letter was the equivillent of tossing a grenade in the room as he left.

If Sherrod cannot win this race, then Hackett sure as hell can't. He told an interviewer that anyone who voted for issue 1 in 2004 is unamerican. That's 3/4 of the voters! What kind of ad will DeWine make out of that? My wife and I gave Hackett $1000 when he ran for Congress, but never again.

16. That is not a very encouraging poll generally.
Even with a D win in Ohio, it shows the Senate composition unchanged.

Anyway, both Hacket and Brown were out polling Dewine. This is because DeWine has never been very popular and because he has not started his smear campaign yet where DeWine will string together all of Hackett's rough statements to the media including the chicken-hawk remarks OR will accuse Brown of raising taxes, being soft on defense and taking your guns away. The real issue is who can beat him at his game?

25. Brown had passed on the senate race initially and when no other Dem
would take the challenge, Hackett was encouraged to run for the senate by the grassroots and DSCC. As Hackett was in Washington DC conferring with Senate Dems, Brown changed his mind.

Brown screwed up. He should have said when he got the initial invite that he would form an exploratory committee to investigate a run for the senate. This would have halted the search for a candidate and allow Hackett to keep prepping for another run against Schmidt.

Brown is the stronger candidate and the more progressive one but he created this mess and he better win in November.
