Divorce, blackmail alleged in (NY) GOP governor's race

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Republican candidate for governor John Faso denied reports Tuesday that he threatened to divulge the impending divorce of another GOP candidate unless he left the race.

GOP candidate Patrick Manning accused Faso of threatening to spread a story that Manning was getting a divorce and dating another woman, according to published reports.

"It's absolutely untrue," Faso said.

The Post reported that an anonymous e-mail was sent to reporters Friday disclosing Manning's marital problems and new relationship. Manning linked the e-mail to the Faso camp, and accused Faso of threatening, through campaign staffers, to divulge the marital rift unless Manning dropped out, according to The New York Sun.
