George Lucas appears with Nancy Pelosi

At a retreat last week for the Republican members of the House of Representatives, lawmakers laughed at a spoof video portraying House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as the evil "Darth Nancy," pursued by virtuous GOP rebels.

Then, on Monday, President Bush reached across the partisan galaxy when he honored Lucas for his pioneering visual effects by presenting him with the National Medal of Technology.

The filmmaker showed all due respect to Dubya at the ceremony. But yesterday he declared The Force is with the Democrats.

Striking back for Pelosi at her Innovation Generation Town Hall, Lucas suggested Dick Cheney controlled Bush.

"The emperor works behind Darth Vader, he doesn't actually stand in front," Lucas said. "I say that in fear of getting hit with a lot of buckshot."

Outside the event, GOP staffers showed up "dressed in 'Star Wars' costumes".

1. I like Geoerge.. actually more than his movies! Charlie Rose interviewed

him about a year ago and he was refreshing and interesting. And we all know he tore up his directors guild card back in the 70's when they told him he could not put the titles at the end of the Star Wars instead of beginniing. He's got balls.

When (the students) asked him to cast lawmakers as "Star Wars" characters, Lucas hesitated, "In the empire, Congress is irrelevant - they talk, they rant, they rave," he said, "But it doesn't mean anything, because the emperor controls it all."

When pressed to be specific about who the emperor would be... "It's not who you think. The emperor works BEHIND Darth Vader," he said to loud laughter and applause, implying that Vice President Dick Cheney would be cast as the behind-the-scenes villain.

of his new industial campus in SF. Lucan lives in Woolsey's district but his main work campus is in Pelosi's district.
