DNC Confirms 11 cities bid for Democratic National Convention!!
According to "Matt" and his awesome website "2008 Democratic Convention Watch" ~~~ http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/

.. and the *unconfirmed* list is .... drumroll ...

~ New Orleans
~ Anaheim
~ Dallas
~ Denver
~ Detroit
~ Las Vegas
~ Minneapolis
~ New York City
~ Orlando
~ Phoenix
~ San Antonio

Per the NY Daily News: "DNC press secretary Josh Earnest said his office is already moving on its next conventions, having approached about 35 cities at the beginning of the year. They've gotten 11 responses from interested cities, including New York and hurricane-ravaged New Orleans.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/local/story/391700p-332221c.html

Matt can't confirm that those are the lucky eleven yet, but through his awesome sleuthing, he was able to find out through the Orange County Register, that the Democratic National Committee plans to send its request for proposals to the above listed cities.

Hopefully Matt will stop in here again!!

** PAGING MATT, DU TO MATT... COME IN MATT ** !!

Matt (and his website) are a wealth of excellent info!

At least some of their money would be given over to the city they drowned, victim's rights
and all that.

36. That would be a HELL of an UP-YOURS to the GOP.
I'm sure New Orleans would welcome Dems. It would highlight who WASN'T there for them a few summers earlier... and remind everybody (along with the file footage of all those stranded flood victims clinging to their rooftops in desperation - while junior and his buddies ate cake and played guitar and visited a fancy hotel. Besides, they could use the infusion of tourist dollars that would come with all those delegates and the machinery surrounding them.

When Texans want to vacation within the state--San Antonio is the first choice. History, charm, culture & great food. Although it's hot in the summer, the humidity is lower than here in Houston.

Looking at the list (and again, we don't know if it's the confirmed list just yet.. but per Matt's info, it's pretty likely).. I have to say.. there are some EXCELLENT LOCATIONS there!!!

BTW.. I wanted to add the 11 cities on a poll here, but the doggone poll function only lets you put 10 selections!

Great city, Great Dems, just gotta get rid of the 'Puke governor this year! and the 'Puke Senator in '08 - it may be a perfect place to highlight the future Democratic Senator from Colorado!

Hawkeye-X

... and not to mention that we've added shitloads of hotels in Downtown Denver and a major, major upgrade to the Colorado Convention Center.

as proof of the GOP led recovery down there?

Even if it isn't true, can't you just see the Faux talking heads - "we cleaned up New Orleans so well that the Democrats could have their convention there."

Just a thought.

I like Detroit (swing state hit hard by outsourcing) or Phoenix (western US being a future political battleground that the Dems could certainly win).

11. New Orleans - hands down
Wonderful public relations opportunity.

By '08 N.O. should be able to handle it and every second of television time for an entire week will remind the country of how Republican mismanagement compounded one of the greatest national tragedies of our time.

The Democrats can even use it metaphorically: the great city of the South rises from the ashes as the great political party re-rises and takes back the reins of power.

47. Thanks for supporting your point with examples..... not.
Kerry's promise to count every vote referred specifically to Greg Palast's charges
that the votes of people of color disproportionately wind up as "spoiled" ballots.

If I remember right, the number of spoiled ballots in Ohio exceeded the margin of
"victory".

Kerry sent the message loud and clear: Black people's votes are not important.
He owes a lot of people a big apology.

15. At the same time, Chicago turned the RNC down flat
citing other projects taking precedence. I think nobody wants those cheap bastards and lousy tippers screwing up their traffic patterns while they try to tell us how important they are that they need all that extreme security to the point that people have to plan their vacation time around the damn thing cause they can't get to their fucking jobs.

I knew Denver was in the running for the DNC. A few of the others were a little surprising. The Dems need to go west, though, and switch from squabbling over yuppies to presenting some economic populism. The west is at the tipping point and just needs a little encouragement, a little hope for a better future, to kick the GOP to the curb.

20. My prediction is narrowed down to...
Minneapolis or Anaheim. Minneapolis because of the significance of the mid-west. Anaheim because its a great Democratic state.

~ New Orleans won't be able to handle it even in 08.
~ Dallas - Way too GOP
~ Denver - Why? What do they have 4 electoral votes or something?
~ Detroit - Michigan's already blue
~ Las Vegas - Ummm... No for obvious reasons
~ New York City - Definite maybe but the GOP was just there
~ Orlando - Another longshot because a lot of people still think Florida could go blue
~ Phoenix - What? 5 electoral votes. These are not critical states for anyone.
~ San Antonio - NOT a GOP city, but in a GOP state.

35. I think your math is a little off
Colorado has 9 electoral votes and Arizona 10 (same as Minnesota) ... either would have been enough to tip the election for gore, and together they would have been enough to tip the election for kerry. Colorado was also very, very close, though I don't remember how close AZ was. Given how close the last two elections have been, I think any tippable state is a critical one. With high concentrations of hispanic citizens, both also offer strong demographics for potential Democratic growth as well.

I agree with you about the rest of the states though, with the exception of detroit: michigan was quite close last time around ... closer than Minnesota was, and also more valuable.

How about:

Madison, Wisconsin
Iowa City, Iowa
Columbia, Missouri

Tuscon, Arizona

Just thinking it could be a way to break the mold and go after the youth vote. These towns likely have big sports arenas for basketball and they likely have a lot of hotel and other housing for the delegates and media - and lobbyists.

28. hello again
First, no need to put my name in quotes - it's really Matt.

A couple of comments on some of the posts here.

As Larissa stated, the list of the actual cities had not shown up anywhere else, so it could end up being wrong. But New Orleans, Anaheim, Denver, Detroit, New York and Orlando were all known to be interested, so the list seems reasonable.

Also, remember the DNC makes the rules, and it can change them. So if a city not on this list wants to get back in the game, I'm sure it could happen.

I think there are three things to watch for as this process moves forward. Logistics, Politics and Money. The logistics part we'll be able to keep track of - are the arenas big enough, is there enough hotel space? The politics, as always, will always be debatable. And the money, how much a city is willing to offer, may be the hardest to judge.

The wild card in all this is New Orleans. Logistically, I think New Orleans will be ready. The Superdome will be hosting NFL games this fall, so it will be fine in 2008. New Orleans will also be hosting trade shows/conventions starting this summer. The politics is difficult, though, with good arguments to be made for and against New Orleans.

29. Hi Matt (with no quotes) .. LOL !!!
I sure wish you'd drop in here more!! Maybe at least to let us know when you update your awesome website!!! ~~

I noticed quite a while after I saw your site, that the Daily KOS also picked up on it and they too are listing those same 11 cities in a poll. (Denver is winning, with New Orleans coming in second)

I also saw this article on the Union-Time Tribune out of San Diego. It may be on your website already, I'm not sure.. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20060216-1240-convention.html

The article lists the cities that the GOP sent bid requests to. Notice that all of our eleven finalist were also sent requests by them..

So it looks like the DNC sent out requests to bid to 35 cities, and the GOP sent out bid requests to the following 31 cities:

New Orleans
San Diego (didn't wish to bid at this time)
Anaheim
Atlanta
Boston
Charlotte
Chicago (didn't want to bid, period)
Columbus
Dallas
Denver
Detroit
Houston
Indianapolis (didn't wish to bid at this time)
Los Angeles
Kansas City
Memphis
Miami
Minneapolis
Nashville
New York
Orlando
Philadelphia
Phoenix
Pittsburgh
Portland
Sacramento
San Antonio
San Francisco
Seattle
St. Louis
Tampa

The GOP hasn't yet mentioned how many cities will bid for their convention, but I'm not sure when their deadline is either..

Anyway.. THANKS FOR STOPPING BY !!!!!!!!

33. If they go anywhere but New Orleans,
it will be an example of their usual strategic blunders. The RNC went to Ground Zero for their last convention, and from there, managed to turn our candiate into a laughingstock. We need to take a page from their book, and got to OUR Ground Zero -- right to the heart of the devastation their inexcusable lack of leadership directly caused -- and show the rest of the country why there should not be another Republican administration, or Senate, or Congress ever again.

101. Me too, I double that thought!
GOP used New York to frame the debate on 9-11. Dems need to frame the debate on GOP failures, and New Orleans is a biggie! Beside it would help N.O. at the same time.

As a Dallasite, let me assure you the only thing as high as the temperature in August is the humidity.

Advantage: free outdoor steam/sauna bath for everyone!

43. New Orleans, without a doubt!
However, I'd go for Minneapolis as second choice, because I think it'd be kinda cool to have Senator Al Franken be one of the speakers (of course, that's on the assumption that Al defeats that old charmer :puke: Senator Norm Coleman. :puke:
Sorry in advance to any Texans or Floridians, but I just can't stand the thought of having the convention in either of those states due to the Bushies.

44. Freepers DISS New Orleans as site for their own convention.
Since the 2008 conventions are starting to become a newsworthy topic in the press, I wanted to see if the freeks were discussing their potential locations.

They are talking about it ---- and they could care less if a national convention was a shot in the arm to the local economy of New Orleans.

In fact, not one of them even stopped to consider how hosting a convention could benefit the city and state financially.

:grr: Not one of the sons of bitches said a thing about trying to help New Orleans! :grr:

Instead, they talked about the "stench" of the city, they shared racist photos and laughed about a fake ads for a beer dubbed "LooterGuy" --and they talked about finding a city where the cops will actually beat the crap out of "MoveOn. types."

They are truly pathetic, classless, careless slobs.

One look at their comments and it's easy to see -- they care as much about the future of New Orleans as much as Dick, Bush and bastard Hastart.

They don't deserve New Orleans. --- They don't deserve shit!

they need a democratic convention and they have the infrastructure. As much as I like NO, it's just not viable....and truthfully Detroit has been suffering longer, Detroit is like Buffalo and any other northern city with a strong industrial past that is going through some hard times.

take the surge of people?
If it is held there, I think they should be concerned about the people still having to rebuild and even come back to NO.
It could also be good to get some real help there.
Othewise, San Antonio, a Demcractic city, as is El Paso.
Or Denver.

Do the Dems want to reach out to the Heartland? Really.

Come the fuck on!

They should have their convention in Little Rock or Memphis or Nashville or Raleigh or Manhattan (the mid-western version).

I read on Matt's website that Howard Dean has a committee of 10 or so people studying the pros and cons of each city and will be visiting each of them.

I'd love to be on that team!
