Chertoff responds to Katrina report:

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Wednesday that his department's response to Hurricane Katrina was "woefully inadequate" and caused extra suffering for the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Chertoff told senators he accepts responsibility for "many lapses" during the catastrophe that left 1,300 dead and caused tens of billions of dollars in damage. He said he was surprised to see that federal relief agencies under his command were unable to keep up with deliveries of water, ice and food after the storm.
