Do TWO things today to stop Bush - Join ACLU, order Harpers.
Two simple acts will make a guaranteed significant impact on Bush's power grab. Put your shoulder to the wheel today. Send a message to those on the front lines of dissent, and enable them to step up the fight.

1. Join the ACLU today. http://www.aclu.org.

2. Buy a copy of the March Harpers magazine or, better yet, subscribe. The editor's centerpiece argues for the impeachment of Bush. And the magazine will hold a public forum on the merits of impeaching Bush with Lewis Lapham, John Conyers, and others in March in NYC. This is an act of courage. Support it today. http://www.harpers.org.

Come on, DU. I'm going to post this message every single freaking day. Do it. Do it.

5. Harper's Mag
I just received my issue this noon. Read the first two paragraphs, then had to start car to go back to work. Great stuff. Color me dense, but how will joining the ACLU stop Bush?

10. Harpers Magazine is da bomb
I gave subscriptions for Christmas. It's the only major magazine that did a big spread on the stolen 2004 election. I will always love them for that. My subscription runs out in 2008.

And of course I'm card-carrying ACLU.

Great suggestions. Also, share with your Pacifica radio station, if you have one, TruthOut, DU (of course), Democracy Now, and anyone else who is effectively speaking truth to power.

15. Ok, I just joined the ACLU
You are so right. We need to join and support them as they actively fight to keep our freedoms from being eroded. I am wondering if they are experiencing any kind of upswell in membership with this whole NSA thing as well as the spying on Quakers and activists? It would be so wonderful if they were.

16. Subscribe to Harpers
It's a great all-around magazine. I just started last year, and I didn't know what I was missing. It fills the long-term void left when I stopped subscribing to the Atlantic Monthly because of James Fallows' 2000 hit piece on Gore (who was drawn with fangs on the cover). It can take me two hours to get through a Harpers.

And, of course, I'm a member of the ACLU. It's job could not be more important right now. They need the support now.

18. Exactly the same as me
I used to subscribe to Atlantic Monthly but it changed dramatically.

After dropping my subscription to Atlantic Monthly I subscribed to Harpers and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's great and Lapham's stuff is fantastic, his "Tentacles of Rage" piece on the right wing domination of just about everything and how it came about is a must read. In that same edition is Naomi Kline's article on Iraq called Year Zero which is another must read. Also, not long ago Lapham wrote a great piece on America's movment toward fascism.

This afternoon when I opened my mailbox, there was my March copy of Harpers with Lapham's "The Case For Impeachment: Why We Can No Longer Afford George W. Bush". I can not wait to read it!

17. I refuse to give a cent to the ACLU as long as they ignore election reform
I consider the right to vote to be the centerpiece of all my "civil rights," and if the ACLU sees fit to ignore the stealing of our democracy, then I don't think they deserve anybody's money.

I have a computer file that says this and goes over some of the latest frauds. I send this letter back everytime they write asking for money. If everybody would do this, we would very soon have a really powerful lawsuit aimed at electronic voting, which IN PRINCIPLE is unconstitutional I believe. How can you have a democracy if there is not a voter-verified paper ballot and if the results are not cloesly and fairly audited for every election?

I don't think such a case would be hard to win. It gets harder, however, with every election cycle since new RW ideologues are added to the SCOTUS and to other courts around the country, not to mention the unpopular wars and policies which result from these un-elected reps.

They might not cover every issue -- but it seems to me that the ACLU has been been more than a thorn in the side of the Bushits.

24. kick for the weekend
I'm not going away on this. Every day, I'm going to urge DU-ers to take these two actions. Total cost for a year can be as low as $25! ACLU will accept minimal donations from low-income folks, and a year's subscription to Harper's is under $15.

Think of the message sent to the publishing world if Harper's subscription base jumped by 10,000 in a short period of time. It would send shock waves through the print community.

Think what would happen if ACLU's membership jumped significantly at the time Bushco is pushing the unitary executive crap. "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." Even a Goldwater Republican can get behind that!

I beg you. Do it. Let's lend some significant clout to those who stand between us and tyranny.
