If I was a candidate for Congress
Here's what my platform would be:

******Very hardline strong national security. I would hammer home over and over that Iraq made us less safe and that for all the empty talk about the Bush administration being tough on terrorists, they have left our borders and our ports wide open and defenseless. We are in a MUCH worse situation than we were before 9/11.

*******Very hardline pro healthcare. The healthcare situation in this country is a national disaster. We need to revamp the system from ground up, we need dramatic action. And if that means scrapping everything and constructing a sensible, single payer system, so be it. We are in a crisis.

*******Very hardline anti illegal immigration. Note I stress "Illegal." I enthusiastically welcome anyone who wants to come here legitimately. But illegal immigration undermines our security, our borders and our rule of law. If we want to reform our immigration laws to better reflect our needs as a society, let's do it. But we must enforce the current laws on the books until that day occurs.

*******Very hardline pro privacy. I would hit the Republicans over the head again and again with Teri Schiavo and their big brother approach to government. Read my lips: family medical decisions should be private affairs between a family and their physicians. A family has the constitutional right not to have big government come into their lives and make medical decisions for them. Additionally, no American under any circumstances should be subject to a different set of rules imposed on them by the government. Opposition to gay couples having equal marriage rights is un American and unconstitutional. There is no room for compromise when it comes to civil rights for all Americans. Civil rights are inviolable.

********Tax reform. Corporations and wealthy Americans must pay their fair share of what makes this country run. Big industries and their lobbyists have for too long been in bed with the Republican party and ensured that tax legislation benefits them and not the average American wage earner. This has resulted in a dangerous and unsustainable budget deficit. We need tax relief for the middle class and tax fairness for corporations.

******** Pro Gun rights. Every American has the right to own and bear arms. Regulation within reason is acceptable, but I would reaffirm anywhere and everywhere that my sympathies lie with the constitutional rights of the average American to own their own gun.

I'm sure a lot of you wouldn't vote for me. :)
