Poll question: If these historical Dems were running in '08, who would you support?
If anyone says focus on '06, they really need to lighten up:-). This one's just for fun.

1. Several champions on your poll, but I went with Jefferson, with RFK a
very strong second.

Jefferson would put a pro-science Enlightenment president back in the White House.

3. I'm reading Evan Thomas' RFK biography right now
Edited on Sun Feb-19-06 03:48 AM by Heaven and Earth
its fascinating to me because I haven't studied the Kennedys, so I never really got the whole Kennedy mystique thing.

10. Let us know later on how you liked the Thomas biography, H & E.
Once in a while, the History Channel will run speeches by John or Robert Kennedy, and it's a startling shock to hear intelligent people use language to define and elevate and encourage and inspire.

Especially compared to the vacuous chimp in the White House right now!

17. This was HARD. I almost went for Jefferson, but went with RFK ...
i would have liked BOTH... Jefferson and Robert Kennedy, they'd be an excellent team!

so much for fantasy - btw, as polls go this was certainly the most fun and challenging.

by the way, i noticed the huge vote that FDR received, FDR did a lot of great things domestically - and that's certainly to be commended. Bobby would have no problems strengthening those programs, but he wanted us out of Viet Nam - FDR estabslished the legitimacy of the MIC - i know too much about how Pearl Harbor happened, and why it was allowed - follows the similar patterns of 9/11 - so much stuff we now know about WWI..

anyway i don't want to get into all of that, i have to leave..

just saying, Bobby and Jefferson would have been a great pair, imo.

18. Have to agree whole-heartedly. A powerhouse of a duo, those two.
I love this thread and poll and discussion, but with one downside: it makes me homesick for those halcyon Democrats who shaped the party. I'm always hoping to follow their levels of accomplished public service, and that's probably why people like Holy Joe Lieberman rile me up so fast.

2. I was leaning toward Carter, but picked FDR.
I think that FDR would find a way to get us back on track, but Carter would be the peace maker in the world.

6. Jefferson.
He knows how the system is SUPPOSED to work. Nothing like the architect of a system to set it right again.

7. Carter... honor, integrity and morality in the White House...
... with Jefferson as his Secretary of State and MLK as Chief Justice (as long as we're dreaming!) and Barbara Jordan as VP (and Chairman, pro tem, of the Senate, which is why I REALLY want her here!)

11. But also pretend you don't know much about them
For example, you're not voting for FDR, creator of the new deal... you're voting for the FDR of 1932.

12. We need LBJ ...
... a complete bastard who had an ethical bypass at birth but who had liberal policy instincts and killer, cut-throat political instincts.

We need a fighter!

imho

in a time of crisis, combined with a social conscience.

15. They would ALL be DINOs according to a good segment of DU
All the people who bitch about every Dem alive today would have found fault with every single one of these men, too. None of them was particularly popular with the far left of their own time, either.

All that said, I picked FDR.

16. So far, it looks like FDR, with Jefferson as his running mate
Edited on Sun Feb-19-06 02:15 PM by Heaven and Earth
since Bobby Kennedy and FDR are from the same state.;-) (Polls are still open, though. Like Tom Delay\\\'s House of Representatives, this vote never closes.)

That would be a wonderful combination, assuming no one knew about Jefferson\\\\\\\'s cutting up the Bible. We could definitely win the red states.

*sigh* If only...
