U.S. Envoy: Abuse in Iraq Was a Crime

By LARA SUKHTIAN, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 4 minutes ago

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The top U.S. envoy for public diplomacy said Sunday the abuse of prisoners in Iraq was a crime and did not reflect U.S. policies in the Middle East.

In an interview with the Dubai based pan-Arab telecasting giant Al-Arabiya, Undersecretary of State Karen Hughes said the U.S. should not be judged by the actions of a few.

"These are horrible crimes and they are a violation of our laws and our policies. They do not represent the United States, and the president made it clear that we expect all prisoners to be treated with respect and in a humane way," Hughes said.

Hughes arrived in Dubai, one of the seven Emirates, on Sunday after a two-day visit to Doha Qatar, where she attended the U.S.-Islamic World Forum and implored regional leaders to wipe out terrorism.

2. See, Mohammed, we don't torture. Abu Ghraib,
Guantanamo and those secret interrogation prisons in Europe are the work of a few misguided aberrants that have been thoroughly investigated and punished. Do you love us now?

The ultimate incompetent crony appointment, trying to put lipstick on a pig. It would be funny if it weren't pathetic.

6. Ignore our actions, listen only to our words?
Rest assured the Muslim world remembers your words, too, like "crusade", and Ann Coulter saying that all Muslims should be Christianized.

15. Rice leaves today for this area
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the administration continued to support the sale, and would brief congress on its decision. “It’s the considered opinion of the US government that this can go forward,” Rice told a round table of Arab journalists at the state department in Washington.

Rice said there had been a “thorough review” of the sale, and “it was decided that this could be done and done safely”.

She described Abu Dhabi as “a very good friend” of the US. “I hope our friends in Abu Dhabi would not be offended by the fact that in our democracy we debate these things.”

‖Rice leaves today to visit several Middle East states, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
