Hunter S. Thompson shot himself a year ago today...
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 10:33 AM by SteppingRazor
In Memoriam, from 2003's Kingdom of Fear:

"We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world-a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us... No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we'll kill you.

Well, shit on that dumbness. George W. Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world. We didn't vote for these cheap, greedy little killers who speak for America today- and we will not vote for them again in 2002. Or 2004. Or ever.

Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid little rich kids like George Bush?

They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill "gooks". They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are racists and hate mongers among us-they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis. And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fuck them."

The whole essay, "Jesus Hated Bald Pussy," can be found here:

a beer and a smoke for the good doctor  :smoke:

Along with Burroughs, Bukowski, Kerouac and Wolfe, a member of the Big Five Writers that helped me find my own style and voice. And in particular, Thompson was a man whose politics ran so close to mine that a political argumment between the two of us would have been more or less futile. No ground to disagree on. To use a few of his own terms, The man stomped the terra, and marched on a road of bones.

4. A year ago?! I remember it like yesterday. What a horror this last yr.
has been since.

My heartfelt respect to his memory however. Writers of such brave verbal-impact are rare.

May he at last rest in peace.

(If however it wasn't 'Suicide'...could he send a clue, a sign...anything...for those 'keeping count.')

Damned straight. Above and beyond his personal pain I suspect the future he saw was so dire that it influenced his final decision.

9. Which Wolfe?
Thomas Wolfe of Asheville (You Can't Go Home Again, Look Homeward, Angel) or Tom Wolfe (The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test)? I like 'em both. And I loved Dr. Hunter S. Thompson and Jack Kerouac, too.

And, sadly, Hunter was the last of them alive... after all, Tom Wolfe's soul died a long time ago.

20. Thompson Suicided?
I have never believed Hunter Thompson killed himself. The more I read about him and the more I learn about the circumstances of his death convince me he was "suicided". Apparently he was planning to write about the crimes of the Bushes, including their complicity in the 9/11 false flag attacks. Put his name on the list with the many other truth seekers who threatened the Bush crime family and paid with their lives. It's a long list and it continues to grow. God willing, all this will be exposed in time. In the meanwhile, be vigilant, question everything and pray for justice.

21. His son was in the house with him at the time
and so were his daughter-in-law and grandson. So it seems unlikely that it was coercion or murder.

life to courage and loathing, and the battle against the scariest, most loathsome
challenge of his life was just getting started. It's hard to imagine anyone with
kids choosing to step aside at this time and not fight for what's right.

I don't know what happened. Maybe we'll never know. Maybe "they" had something on
him. We all need to reach into the HST in our hearts and soldier on for him. In a
time when most journalists are reduced to quivering wraiths at the mere thought of
being passed over for promotion, we need every one that's not afraid to die. His
kind is rare and we'll all have to just try to pretend we're up to the task.

23. Hard to believe, isn't it?
It does seem like jsut a few months ago. Probably because of all the news of the funeral back in Auguest, when they shot his ashes out of a cannon.

On a slight tangent -- hey, y'know, I don't think I've ever had this many recommendations on one of my posts! Yay me!
