Not to the country, but to the apes temporarily running it, Cheney is solid gold.

He takes on the work the overemployed ape in the Oval doesn't want to dirty his hands or his "legacy" with. Then they plant stories about a rift between them. Bush insists we don't torture while Cheney fights for the ability to torture.

Even Cheney's drunken hunting trip was a gift to Bush. The WH spent a week answering - or, more accurately, not answering - questions about that instead of having to deal with the more inconvenient questions about Iraq and about sneaking Social Security privatization past us.

See how that works? Every time the press starts talking about Cheney going off the reservation, it's time to forget Cheney and ask what the monkey behind the curtain is up to.
