Why are all '06 veteran candidates Democrats?
We can make up huge ground on this issue. Rememeber complacency is the enemy, not the opposition.

1. Because "College Republican" types don't actually *join* the military
They just *support* the military.

From a safe distance.

2. And without actually spending money to benefit the troops...
As fiscal conservatives, they don't believe in wasting money on such luxuries as body armor, medical care or salaries. Money is better spent on lining their own pockets.

13. You need sound bites:
"Republicans 'support our troops' by sending them into battle unprotected."

"Support our troops: bring them home."

"Republicans send other people's kids to war. Democrats go into battle to protect America."

"We've been at war for 3 years. Why are so many troops and vehicles still un-armored? Is this how Republicans support our troops?"

"War should not be waged for Halliburton. It is not a game or an investment. If we go to war with a made-up enemy, we endanger our national security. We cannot afford to waste our troops' lives on a sham war, when we need them to protect us from real threats elsewhere."

I might be interested in helping in some way. I'm currently advising a House candidate in a Southwestern state (who is looking very good to win). I'm not a pro (yet) but maybe eventually... :-) BTW, I'm in DC.

My strength is in writing pithy prose. I'm not a Joe Trippi expert in 'net organizing, though I do run a couple of small web-based businesses. I can do some web design and some writing (including speech writing) if that's helpful.

BTW, you're gonna need friends in DC when you get here. Who's going to pour champagne over your head otherwise? ;-)

Private mail me for contact info.

Isn't it time we focus on these assets and not dwell on what the GOP ought to be doing? Losing a game and whining about it is different than getting meaner, tougher and stronger..... and smarter.

4. because
Those who join the military believe they are gihting for freedom. They are true patriots, unlike those who would rather use the young men and women's patriotism to their own advantage.

My bother left for his first tour today, a year in Korea. I don't agree with any of his politics, but he does think he is doing the right thing. We both want the same thing, peace, we just think there are different ways to get it.

17. Let me let you in on an interesting observation
I'm a Marine vet. When I marched in DC against the Iraq War, there were a disproportionate number of war veterans there. Why? Nobody who serves glamorizes war. We don't show blown apart body parts for this war, because that is the messy reality and the public can't handle the truthful gore. True leaders know war is a last resort means when diplomacy is all but exhausted. If we wanted Hussein out, a drone - hellfire would have done the job.

31. Maybe they are waking up.
Ive been out less than three months (after seven years), and since 2000 most people were either drinking the kool-aid that is Shrub or were IMO too scared to not only disagree with the CINC but to be outed as a *gasp* liberal because the military's favorite news network, Fox, paints libs as anti-military wimps.

I spent a year in year in Iraq constantly saying "This wouldnt happen if Gore was president." It didnt make my life easier with my various bosses but it was the truth and it made me feel like I was giving a voice to all those that felt they couldnt be political surrounded on one side by repubs who act if politics was a football game(support your team no matter what) and evangelical christians who believed Bush was sent by God and insurgents who tried to harm us (With good reason, i might add. We treated Iraqi civilian like dirt and we were reaping what we sow.)

Flash forward from our deployment to the 2004 election, we had several officers in my unit telling they're soldiers that if they voted for Kerry we would be surrendering to the terrorists within months. Unfortunately there are many kids in the Army who have no knowledge of anything really, who dont read, who dont go out of their way to learn facts and are rather impressionable. Maybe if there were enough people like me speaking out, the impressionable ones would hear something other than RNC talking points all day long. Kerry would have been good for the military, but like people in the red states alot of soldiers will vote against their own self-interests out of ignorance.

People like me, we get kicked out of the Army for being mentally ill. Of course the majority of the time they decide its pre-existing and the soldier ends up with no benefits. Seven years in the Army with no problems, and I was bi-polar before I joined? The things you learn when you finally get enough rank to actually start making a difference.
