Sen. Dianne Feinstein tours San Diego cross-border tunnel
SAN DIEGO (AP) - California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein took a peek today inside the longest cross-border tunnel ever discovered along the U-S-Mexico border.
Feinstein told reporters in San Diego that she would be introducing federal legislation that makes it a crime to build such tunnels. Tunneling under the U-S border isn't a crime, but smuggling people or drugs through it is.
Under Feinstein's legislation, anyone who builds a cross-border passageway could be sentenced to up to 20 years. Feinstein says 40 tunnels have been discovered along U-S border since the September 11th, 2001 terror attacks. About half of those have been found in California, including eight discovered this year in San Diego.
Feinstein also said she would request a classified briefing from the Department of Homeland Security to try and restore San Diego to a list of cities that are eligible for funding because they are considered likely terrorist targets.
