A couple of Democrats want to pass legislation to prevent Dubai from buying the ports. Frist atttempts to keep it from coming to the floor. Bush says if it comes to him, he will veto it.
However the debate happens. Republicans are torn. Only a half dozen or so are willing to go along with their President. But they don't want to be put on the spot by having to vote one way or another. They would prefer it just go away.
But the Democrats press the issue. They are forced to vote up or down. Seventy-five Senators vote against giving the ports to Dubai. Does Bush veto and take the chance of his veto being over-ridden? Or does he still have the political capital to get his own Party to back him? Or do they desert him? I can see some interesting politics in the days ahead. :)

2. But he thinks he can change their minds... |

They have always been with him in the past. Surely they would not stab him in the back this time. He can get Karl to twist a few arms and they will come around. Do you think it will not work?

4. it will be settled quietly one way or another |
|
yes, it is possible to bring the party into line, but not if it goes to explicit votes, vetos, etc.
if it's happening at all, it's happening quietly with solid banana republican cooperation after cutting a deal behind the scenes.

5. But will it be possible to make this silently disappear....? |
|
After so much attention? Wouldn't that be almost impossible to do? To cut a deal? My first impression is to make them take a stand. Make them vote one way or another. No compromise - no quarter.

The only legislation that'll be allowed is some kind of window dressing that'll offer a fake assurance that the 'threat' is defused.
The world must be safe for corporatism! All governments are required to honor and enforce contacts, no matter whether the company changes ownership. The entitlements of ownership must be enforced globally or global corporatism will punish the offending parties. Central and South America offer many examples of such punishments, as does the Middle East. Titles, contracts, and ownership itslef exists solely by virture of the laws and their enforcement by the government granted the territorial franchise by Global Wealth. Intellectual property, real property titles, articles of incorporation, business licensing, liability limitations, export/import regulation, and public funding are all creatures of government. None of it exists if government doesn't maintain and enforce the legal fictions.
