The Pombo Mambo: Dancing Around Congress’ Ethics Rules

The Pombo Mambo:
Dancing Around Congress’ Ethics Rules

Congressman Richard Pombo exemplifies the Republican Culture of Corruption in the House of Representatives. He uses his position of power to benefit his family, engages in pay to play politics with energy companies and Indian tribes with ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and is a close ally of indicted former GOP Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

1. Pombo billboard design contest

DCCC Launches New Web Site and Billboard Contest

Defeating Richard Pombo this November would be the single biggest victory we could win against the big polluters in 2006. Last year alone, Pombo proposed selling off 15 sites within our National Parks System, sponsored a bill to drill in Alaska, continued a years-long fight of Tom DeLay’s to make taxpayers pay for the oil companies’ MTBE pollution, and as one editorial put it, tried "to take a meat axe to the Endangered Species Act."

Now, we are offering you a chance to expose Pombo for the polluter he is. Help design a billboard exposing Richard Pombo's Enemy-of-the-Earth crusade. We'll be purchasing a billboard in his district advertising this Web site, and we want you to design it. All billboard design entries will be judged by political strategist, James Carville and Founder, Stop Global Warming.org, Laurie David. The winner will be announced with the unveiling of the billboard in an email from Carville and David to more than 1 million DCCC supporters before it goes up in Pombo’s district.

DoI staffers stayed on with Pombo

By Alexander Bolton

Two staffers on the House Resources Committee played key roles in developing controversial environmental legislation while receiving salaries from the Department of Interior in apparent violation of House rules limiting their congressional service to one year.

The two provisions they helped develop were attached to the budget-reconciliation bill, passed last month. Lawmakers stripped the provisions during negotiations before final congressional passage.

The staffers’ roles in creating and pushing the legislation have raised concerns among congressional Democrats and environmentalists.

Snip...

Jackson Coleman and Rick Deery, the Interior employees, have worked as detailees under Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Calif.), the chairman of the Resources Committee, since the middle of 2003, Kennedy said. Their length of service is more than twice the length defined by the House ethics manual.
