We Can't Even find a proper opponent for Ney: Ohio Democrats Shying Away
National Democrats failed three times to recruit experienced elected officials to run against the Ohio Republican at the center of a lobbying scandal. Now, they're left with lesser-known contenders running against one of their top political targets in a race they've been touting for months.

Three men with more experience in countywide elected office and greater name recognition than the four Democrats who are running turned down offers by the party's national House campaign organization last year to challenge Republican Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record).

Ney is a top target for Democrats in the 2006 elections because of his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. When Abramoff pleaded guilty to fraud charges in January, he told federal prosecutors Ney took thousands of dollars in gifts, travel and campaign donations from him and associates in exchange for official acts... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060222/ap_on_go_co/ney_ohio_democrats

1. Clearly, no one in Ohio
wants to attract the kind of crap that Hackett got from the national Democratic establishment...no Democratic insider believes that they won't be stabbed in the back by Schumer, Reid and Emanuel.

2. Indiana Democrats did not field a candidate against Senator Lugar
Rumor has it that the Democrats in Washington didn't want to spend any money on a campaign against Lugar, so they decided to forfeit the race altogether.

3. There are two good Dem candidates in this race
Edited on Thu Feb-23-06 08:38 AM by OzarkDem
I don't live there, but some of the others know who they are, one is Zach Space, the other is Sulzer, the former mayor of Chillicothe. Both are very strong candidates.

This story sounds like its trying to promote Ney and keep the seat R.

Of the three Dem recruits the story mentions, one doesn't even live in the district. The other two are state reps who have no more name recognition or experience than the two Dems who are in the race.

The story is just GOP spin, Ney has good opponents and he's very likely to lose his job.

4. Well, given the Hackett debacle, I'm suprised that they found anybody
To run for any office in Ohio. Why bother when, at any moment, the Democratic "leadership" will come along and backstab you:shrug:
