Cookie-cutter nominees aren’t what the district


Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada held up the confirmation Friday of six appointees to the Tennessee Valley Authority board in protest that all the appointees were Republican.

Since he is a partisan leader, Reid's complaint wasn't surprising. Yet a more valid complaint about the six nominees is that, as a group, they bring little to TVA's table in terms of experience and diversity.

Last year, Congress passed legislation that radically changes TVA's top management: Instead of having three full-time board members who run the agency, it will have nine part-time board members who establish TVA policy.

The board will select a chief executive officer to run the daily operation.

1. Why is the TVA still in existence?

And replace it with what? I believe it is still the largest energy producer in the country. And though not perfect, is preferable to handing over its operations to a bunch of companies that do not have the publics interest high on their list of priorities.

3. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if these political hacks

Suggested selling off major portions of TVA's facilities to private companies, if they get in. The energy industry drools at the thought of killing off the TVA.
