Militia man bolts GOP, runs for commissioner as Democrat

By DAMIAN MANN
Mail Tribune

Carl Worden, a Southern Oregon Militia member and self-proclaimed right-wing Christian conservative, has filed his candidacy for Jackson County commissioner — as a Democrat.

Snip...

Worden switched party affiliations last August, he said, after a group of teachers got kicked out of a Bush rally in Central Point in 2004 because they wore T-shirts that stated "Protect our civil liberties."

"That was no longer my party," said Worden, who voted for Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election. "That was the last straw."

Snip...

Highly critical of the Bush administration for the Iraq War and recent wiretapping, Worden said, "It’s just fascism. It’s that bad."

Worden isn’t the only one to break ranks with Republicans recently.

1. More...

Snip...

"A lot of the Democrats feel the same way I do," said the 56-year-old Eagle Point resident, who has ended his lifelong Republican Party affiliation but remains pro-life, pro-gun and a property rights advocate.

Snip...

"There’s a lot of people who want Walker out," Worden said. "They want to see the county brought into the 21st century and not just have the good-old-boy politics going on around here."

One of the founders of the Southern Oregon Militia in 1993, Worden said his group advocates civil liberties, including free speech and the right to bear arms. The militia, which Worden said has about 800 members, has taken on public officials in the past, filing complaints that launched investigations by the state ethics commission.

Snip...

Worden said he realized he had more in common with Democrats after meeting with veterans supportive of Kerry during the campaign.

2. Be very, very, VERY careful with how much you endorse this guy
I don't remember where it is, but there's plenty of militia groups which will kill if you look too closely at them . . .

4. No one in their right mind would endorse this guy.
But it shoots another election theory out of the water. And if he does, then what about more moderate voters?

8. Blows the theory that Bush rallied the wingnuts
A lot of them were scared sh*tless

We're now learning about wingnut disdain for the Patriot Act and the spying terrifies some of them.

6. I remember reading about this guy
Edited on Thu Feb-23-06 01:12 PM by WildEyedLiberal
He wrote an editorial somewhere in 2004 explaining his decision to vote for Kerry. He didn't care for Kerry's liberalism but believed him to be sincere about doing what's right for America, unlike Bush. He also said if the Constitution Party (ie: right wing militia nutjob) candidate had been viable, he would have voted for him.

He will be no Democrat, unless he's studied Democratic issues and decided he agrees with some of them - he's quite right wing. But I have to applaud his willingness to care about his country enough to break with the Republicans. I think his heart is in the right place even if he is no liberal.

7. He wrote an editorial saying he'd vote for Kerry and it got published
and he lived? Even with Dick Cheney saying that the greatest threat to gun ownership (to an appreciative NRA crowd) was a Kerry Presidency?

Maybe I should change my mind about this guy. This guy has survival skills . . .

9. Fun times in Jackson County

This guy may not be such a bad thing for either side. I say, put this bull in the local political china shop of a Repub establishment and give him a slap.
