Jesse Jackson Jr. Speech

I promised I would give a reply to a speech I heard today.

Today I was honored and privileged enough to hear Representative Jackson and Representative Clay speak to my school. Congressman Clay introduced Congressman Jackson to my high school in St. Louis. Clay, a native of St. Louis, told us how honored he was to introduce Jackson, a dear friend of his, to speak to our student body.

Jackson's speech was enthralling. He conveyed a message of education reform through impressive and powerful rhetoric. Jackson focused around the ideals he was pressing in the House Of Representatives: The idea that education should conform to a higher standard. Basically, his proposal for an amendment to make sure every child was offered the same educational opportunities said that You shouldn't take away from the schools that are already privileged, but give to the schools that need the improvements. He made powerful references to my school. My school is a private school, and the significant portion of my school lives in the top 2% wealth bracket.

His references were made to try to get our minds to focus on the wellbeing of others, and how we can make a difference. I left the speech feeling that Jackson had the right message, had the right attitude, and had the right ambition to be seen as a very influential leader in the process of reforming education.

As the head of Campus Democrats at my school, I was able to meet with both Congressmen Clay and Jackson afterwords. Jackson was just as impressive in person as he was on stage, conveying his points in simple yet logical points of view that improved on every issue he presented before the student body. His plan for education (which I regret I can not describe here due to time restraints) was impressive, and gave me an entirely different outlook on our Congressional Leaders.

Congressman Clay represented the same attitude. Being a citizen of St. Louis, the conversation that took place was more focused on a State Rep. campaign I am currently working on.

The speech was amazing, the attitude was perfect, and the effectiveness of Jesse Jackson Jr. was impressive. I walked away from the speech not viewing Congressman Jackson as simply the son of Rev. Jackson, or simply as a democrat. I walked away from the speech feeling as if I had heard from a man who will lead the way to the most impressive reform our nation has seen in the past decade.
