UAE gave $100 million for Katrina relief

By TED BRIDIS

WASHINGTON -- Weeks before one of its companies sought U.S. approval for its ports deal, the United Arab Emirates contributed $100 million to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, officials confirmed Thursday.

The Bush administration said the money it received from the United Arab Emirates was nearly four times as much as it received from all other countries combined. Other countries, including some in the Middle East, also pledged large contributions but have not yet sent the money.

The White House said the $100 million for storm victims demonstrates the close relationship between the two governments now caught in a firestorm over the potential security risks of state-owned Dubai Ports World running operations at six major U.S. ports.

The money from the United Arab Emirates was previously described by the State Department only as a "very large" contribution. The White House said so far it has received $126 million in international donations, including the UAE money. The administration said there was no connection between the request for U.S. approval of the $6.8 billion ports deal and the UAE contribution. It disclosed details about the donation to support President Bush's description of the nations as important allies.

7. Great. So give them their fucking money back.
It obviously never made it to NO. Then, while you're in the giving spirit, redact the fucked up port contract that would engage both ends of a shipping lane between here and the home of a government which sponsors terrorism. Mkay?

Arab nations rethink aid to tsunami victims

Wednesday, January 05, 2005

By Megan K. Stack, The Associated Press

The Saudi government tripled its tsunami relief offering from $10 million to $30 million yesterday. The United Arab Emirates increased its aid from $2 million to $20 million and began airlifts of relief supplies. And Kuwait, after being blasted for stinginess on the front page of a prominent Sunday newspaper, upped its pledge from $2 million to $10 million.

he's just reminding people of the FUBAR they made w/Katrina. Boy must be getting really desperate - taking the chance of stirring the pot! Hopefully, it will just piss off the populace twice as much!

22. Of course, isn't New Orleans one of the Ports they are buying???
They were investing in their future acquisition and they knew it. I'm sure if any of that money sees N.O. it will be used to rebuild the ports.

:grr:

They want to start rehabbing the port so they can move in once the ink is dry on the deal.

27. An "alleged" contribution from UAE?! Come on...please!
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 10:45 AM by zann725
Clearly a rumor to make UUAE seem "compassionate"/on the side of
"we-the-American people". Translated: "Trust us....do"

If indeed UAE "appeared" to donate anything to Katrina, my bet is said donations NEVER made it to help even ONE Katrina victim. At best, any UAE donation went to those UN-used trailers, sitting, rotting in the mud in Mississippi. OR maybe that million/billion dollar Morgue facility which was uselessly built, and hardly-ever used, and recently closed (clearly a tax write-off ruse). Closed becuase NOT needed?!!! ...as thousands of bodies have YET to be searched and rescued in N.O., nor will they ever be. Or many recovered, never DNA-identified.

But as Babs Shrub once tactlessly said: "These 'people' are much better off now than before."

UAE donating to Katrina?!!! If they offered, and it was accepted...one asks HOW and WHY? Since Chavez also offered food and water, etc. (as did many other foreign countries)..and was denied.
