GOP lawmakers turn out for DeLay

By WENDY BENJAMINSON
The Associated Press

HOUSTON -- U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay was likened to Stonewall Jackson, Lyndon Baines Johnson and a courageous World War I officer Thursday as members of the Texas Republican congressional delegation joined the former House majority leader to endorse his re-election.

The unusual display of GOP solidarity was remarkable for DeLay, who is aggressively campaigning for re-election to the seat he has held comfortably for 22 years. This year he faces a contested primary March 7, and if he wins, Democrat Nick Lampson in November.

"He's got a contested primary; that's why we're here," said U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis.

DeLay, R-Sugar Land, resigned his leadership post as he became embroiled in an ethics scandal involving lobbyist Jack Abramoff. He faces a trial this year on felony money-laundering charges.

5. I was trying to watch the news on PBS and they had on Trent Lott
who was claiming that he didn't want the taxpayers to be burdened with having to pay for elections. In typical repo-think, he totally overlooked the truly extraordinary costs of allowing corporations to loot the national treasury by gaming democracy. Lott was worried about law makers being unable to take fact-finding trips or that the tax payers would have to pay for the trips. He'd rather keep on the Abramoff junkets, which don't cost us a dime. Honestly.

House GOP calls corruption report corrupt

By Josephine Hearn

The House Republicans’ campaign operation is charging that a recently released Democratic report on Republican corruption violated ethics rules.

The 103-page report, “America for Sale: The Cost of Republican Corruption,” was compiled by the Democratic staff of the House Rules Committee and released by the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Louise Slaughter (N.Y.), last week.

Snip...

“It’s a political document through and through. The headline is all you need to know it’s a political document,” said Ed Patru, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). “It’s nothing more than Democrats using official resources to promote political talking points.”

Snip...

“It is … deeply ironic that the NRCC would have the audacity to suggest that a detailed, fact-based report documenting the collapse of our legislative system would constitute unethical behavior,” Slaughter said in a statement, “while at the same time, top Republican officials … have willingly undermined ethical behavior in our House.”
