The assault will come from the right. (II) |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 04:04 AM by kansasblue
Several months ago I wrote a quick post here at DU that basically argued that if the Bush Presidency was to be confronted it would come from the right. The true conservative right. The 'less government', 'lower taxes', 'government out of your lives', right. I'm not sure how you would pull that up from the DU archives and I don't remember all that I wrote. But today it seems more true than when I wrote it. The Democratic party is trying it's best but has yet to pull off any significant opposition Bush. And as I wrote back then I felt that the real assault would have to come from the Right. Those patriotic Americans that truly believed in America and her principles and held these conservative views, they would need to step forward to save the nation. Rove and his corporate MSM allies have beaten up the liberals so bad that most remain silent with the hope that this administration might destruct on it's own accord. But now I think that the time draws near for the conservative right to step forward. It's becoming more obvious that the direction of the country is wrong, that the Democratic party alone can't correct it's course and that it is the true conservative right that needs to engage this errant administration. They need to join with the Democrats and the Greens, the Libertarians and Independents to correct the ship of state. This sweetheart port deal may close the deal. So conservative right... patriotic Republicans... join with us to correct this ship of state.

2. The CIA and DIA are already on the attack. Fitz is their pointman. |

There would never have been a prosecution of the WHIG cabal and the OSP-AIPAC spy cell unless the career intelligence heads and Joint Chiefs had demanded it.
We have some giant allies in the shadows.

10. Agreed. Some patriots still in government are fighting |

There is a legal struggle going on for our country between the two sides, Nazis and Americans. I hope it can be settled legally, but I don't think Bush ever intends to leave the white house unless he's drug out or he knows his brother Jeb or Condi is taking his place.

.. but I agree with you 100%. Most of the Dems in power right now are beneath contempt. They have enabled, abetted and stood around with their heads up their asses while Bush has done all these things, and I see no signs that they know how to or are willing to take the political risks required to accomplish anything at all.
Yes, we'd better hope the old-time conservative steps up because they are really our only hope. I know it will annoy folks that I'm saying this, hit me with you best argument as to why I should not feel this way after failure upon failure upon failure upon failure upon failure.

5. You are making the classic error.... |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 08:19 AM by sendero
... of confusing the current neocon cabal as "convervatives". They are not, and they are so much not that most real conservatives are beyond fed up with them.
The difference between Dems and real conservatives at this point in history is that real conservatives show more backbone than Dems do. I agree with the OP, without the real conservatives we have almost no hope of getting them out, save their own self-destruction which is becoming more possible with each passing day.

6. I'm not sure it's a matter of backbone, really. I think it's more |
|
that the Democrats have been pushed out of the seat of power in nearly every institution they once controlled when the Party had a majority in Congress or were in the White House. Since then, the Dem leadership has been really helpless to fight back. While their hearts are in the right place, they can't do much. The MSM used to do a much better job of carrying the messages of both Parties, but no longer do so, except in a very selective way.
If the Dems hope to get back there, they need to be much more critical and pointed in their message. They need to replace many of their professional staff, and almost all their media consultants, who take the approach of doing nothing except for what seems safe at the moment. The DLC types truly are without vision, and work hard to muzzle the few who try to deliver a sharp opposition message.
Say it like it is, and even the disaffected traditional conservatives will work with us to overthrow the neocons. Once that's done, we all can regroup and sort things out. But, if we're viewed as nothing but opportunists waiting for the system to collapse, what's left of the Democratic Party will simply be pushed aside and relegated to permanent status as the minority party, an irrelevant vestige of the two-party system.
We, the Democratic Left, need to make it clear that the Right has no monopoly on patriotism. If that means forging a working alliance with reasonable conservatives, that's a good thing for all involved. That's how America defeated Nazi Germany and the Fascist Axis.

7. I used to think those things.. |
|
.... but the fact is that the Dems just simply DON'T do and say the things they should, for whatever reason. The idea that they are "shut out of power" has merit, Bushco has marginalized the Dems in congress pretty effectively.
But the media problem is largely of our own creation IMHO. The repugs dispense clear, simple sound bites and we have yet to learn how to do that. The Repugs are not afraid to get in front of a camera and say something provocative (controversy == ratings == airtime) and Dems stick to their measured, careful rhetoric which DOES NOT IMPRESS MODERN DAY AMERICANS, rightly or wrongly.
(as an aside: Kerry and Clinton have made some progress with their patterns of speech, but we need more than 2 :))

in dealing with mainstream media the message needs to be far more pointed than it is today. Gawd, there is so much evidence of serious criminal activity by the GOP leadership, the Dems would not sound at all tinfoil hat.
But, they don't. Why? Who exactly is telling them to be quiet and to mouth platitudes? I think the incumbent Dems, particularly the centrist leadership, is deathly afraid of losing some of the big corporate funders if they really do take their swords out of the sheaths.
I think there's a choice to be made here, and now is the time for us to call on Dean to start calling for the appointment of Special Prosecutors to investigate Rummy and gang for torture. It's time for Dean to call on all Dems to get out front of the camera and talk about the lurid details of Plamegate, Abramoff and Norquist funneling foreign money to the GOP, and the OSP-AIPAC spy case that we talk so much about here. If we have some bad apples among us, get on television, and cut 'em lose. Be aggressively proactive. Do it now!

and we're all taken as "enemy combatants", historically POWs who fight hard and fair are treated better than are inept and cowardly enemies. So, it's in our interest to fight harder than we have.:hi:

11. Nah, this has been going on a long time. |
|
I remind you of Iran/Contra.
Dems in control of Congress, Reagan and Bush let off the hook.
If they had done their jobs back then, 20 years ago now, we would not be dealing with Bush I's retarded offspring or all of Poppy's pardoned felons today.
That's the truth in a nutshell, right there. Take it or leave it.

for anyone in Washington to do their jobs and they haven't. With every scandal swept under the rug the corruption as grown until we reach the current state of crisis. Alas, they only want to put a few more under the rug. Creeping corruption is destroying our nation, and the politicians don't even have the courage to stop legalized bribery. The lobbying scandal will be a perfect example of the fine art of doing nothing. Compare their feeble attempts to do something revolutionary like banning ex-members from the gym with the travesty of the medicare bill. It is so little, so late as to be laughable. The elephant they don't want to address is the massive corruption and the bankrupting - both actual and political - of the American people.

This is the heart of the problem. Widespread corruption is the disease within.
As you say, "The elephant they don't want to address is the massive corruption and the bankrupting--both actual and political --of the American people."
THIS IS WHY I am not holding my breath for the Republicons OR the Dem Lites to DO anything whatsoever to fix this situation.
The only hope lies with those politicians who have not sold out. And newcomers who offer something clearly different. There may be some veterans who are experiencing a little guilt for their crimes against The People...but that doesn't always translate into action or repentance. Guilt usually just leads to stagnation.
