Snow Says He May Tell Congress More About Investment Approvals
Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Treasury Secretary John Snow said the process of approving foreign investments with national- security implications may be changed to keep U.S. lawmakers better informed.
A decision by a Treasury-led panel to approve the purchase of six U.S. ports by a Dubai company aroused a storm of controversy among lawmakers. While the panel adequately addressed security issues, it didn't foresee the possibility of a public outcry, Snow said today.
``If there was a failure, we failed to recognize there might be a public reaction,'' Snow told reporters in Richmond, Virginia. ``Over time, we may recommend improvements in the process so Congress is better informed about transactions.'' Snow himself acknowledged earlier this week that he hadn't been informed in advance of the decision to approve the port deal by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. The panel includes representatives from 12 government agencies and departments, including Defense, Homeland Security and the White House National Security Council.

Bush, Snow Didn't Learn of Port Deal Before Approval (Update6)
Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush didn't know of the sale of six major U.S. port facilities to a Dubai company until after the deal was agreed to and federal approval was granted, his spokesman said. Treasury Secretary John Snow said he learned of it ``by reading it in the newspapers.''
