1. Here!
I'm not that far from the Airport Hilton :hi: It may be a double whammy protest, Peta headquarters is here too, and they just started a Cheney based anti-hunting campaign :toast:

I posted an item in the Virginia Forum.

NORFOLK - Vice President Dick Cheney will be in Norfolk on Monday to help U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake raise money for her 2006 re-election campaign.

Cheney will speak at a sold-out reception for Drake at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Norfolk Airport.

"It is going to be exciting," said Tom Gordy, a spokesman for Drake. "There is a lot of support for Thelma locally, and the vice president coming will show there is a lot of support for Thelma in Washington."

Gordy said about 400 supporters have paid to hear Cheney speak. The event is expected to raise about $200,000 for Drake's campaign. Tickets sold for $150 to $2,100.

Cheney's address is expected to last about 20 minutes. Beforehand, some supporters will attend a private reception with Cheney. The vice president will not answer questions after the speech.

Gordy said supporters were coming, in part, "to show their support for the vice president" after Cheney's recent hunting incident, in which he accidentally shot a friend.

Drake is in her first term. She was elected in the 2nd Congressional District in 2004.

Democrat Philip J. Kellam, the Virginia Beach commissioner of the revenue, is challenging Drake. Two other Democrats - David Ashe and Troy Farlow - dropped out of the race after Kellam announced his candidacy.

On Friday, Kevin Griffis, a spokesman for the Virginia Democratic Party, said he was "thrilled to have Vice President Cheney coming to stump for Thelma." He said it presents an opportunity to contrast the Democratic record in Virginia with the Republican record of "mismanagement in Washington - which I think the vice president and Thelma are responsible for."

This is Cheney's second visit to Hampton Roads in support of a congressional candidate. He came in 2001, to help J. Randy Forbes in his successful campaign for the 4th District seat.
