White Rose
Does anybody but me think the white rose society could grow into a real political party like the Green party did in Europe . Starting small in local elections in different states then after about 10 years going national?

1. Hard to say...
3rd parties aren't particularly successful here. They'd have to do something mighty spectacular to gain any momentum whatsoever.

3. True, but historically, parties have changed in this country.
There's a history of mass exodus from different political parties, always leaving 2 parties.

6. Point...
But I think it would take an awful lot to free this country from THESE parties' stranglehold at this point.

8. Thanks!
I like the White Rose Society too, BTW. They broadcast Thom Hartmann, among others, and he's my favorite radio host.

5. Well, speaking for my own effort...
...I really have no ambitions of doing anything other than taking back the Democratic Party and seeing it send the GOP to the dustbin of history.

11. GOP
Sending the republican party into the dustbin of history would be great. That would leave only one party tho...

12. I imagine that our friends in the Libertarian Party would step in.
And they *are* our friends as they too believe that Bush is trashing the Constitution.

Ben, but can it be done? Some in the party kill any attempt to push the party back towards the left.

9. third parties have a hard time because
of how we define ourselves.

This fault line in our collective psyche along authoritarian social conservatives (the "more restrictions" group) and anti-authoritarian liberals (the "more freedoms" group) is pretty basic.

Add fundy religion and authoritarian corporatism to one side and the concept of self-ownership and social justice to the other side and you have two parties that shape up pretty much like ours today - they resonate to us, or maybe vice versa, so much that "conservatives" have forgotten that conservative used to have nothing at all to do with social conservatism and everything to do with the more complex ideas of fiscal conservatism.

14. I'm still working on the Democratic Party.....:)
But seriously, I think we need to tweak our election/campaign laws so we can include all parties and their candidates on all ballots local-state-national.

Maybe these parties will be taken more seriously if we hear from them other than at general election time?

I'm a Dem moderate, so I can swing in any direction

17. It would be nice if we had instant run-off elections...
Like in Australia, but until we fix out vote counting systems, nothing will help!!!

19. I think it's a resurrection of an old
revolutionary group...this one just replays various lefty radio shows for the most part, and posts a news tidbit here and there.

22. FYI, new film "Sophie Scholl - The Final Days"
As they are distributing leaflets calling for an end to the war, twenty-one-year-old Sophie Scholl and her brother, Hans, are arrested and taken to Gestapo headquarters. There, over the last few days of her life, Sophie is interrogated about the details of her participation in the resistance group known as the White Rose.

http://www.sophieschollmovie.com/

It's recently opened in both NY and LA and is slowly beginning to open across the US (see site for info). It has been nominated for the best foreign feature Oscar and has already won many international awards.

If you speak German then it has been released over there on DVD (but to the best of my knowledge there are no subtitles):

http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007WL44M/

It's getting a DVD release in the UK at the end of April (under the title "Sophie Scholl"):
