It is a never ending fight here in a 'blue' state (last time anyway).

PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY February 27, 2006

Dear xxxx,

Tomorrow, February 28, the Wisconsin Legislature could take the final step towards putting a proposed amendment to the state constitution before the voters to prohibit legal recognition of same-sex couples. The push towards writing discrimination into the state constitution was almost stopped in the state Senate earlier this year -- our last chance to stop it from getting on the ballot is to defeat it in the Legislature's other house, the Assembly.

Call on your representative to vote no on this amendment!

Rep. Mark Pocan
Phone: (608) 266-8570

In Wisconsin, the process for amending the state constitution has two steps: First, the Legislature has to approve the proposed amendment twice; then, a majority of voters must vote for it in order for it to become a part of the constitution. If the Assembly votes in favor of the proposed anti-gay amendment, it will finish the first half of this process (the Legislature approved the proposed amendment for the first time last year, and the state Senate approved it for a second time earlier this year).

But the Assembly can stop the amendment process now by voting no. This proposed amendment would do much more than prohibit same-sex couples from marrying. It would also prohibit any legal recognition of same-sex relationships through civil unions and domestic partnerships.

Tell your representative to oppose writing discrimination into the constitution. Call for a "no" vote on the proposed amendment!

Rep. Mark Pocan
