Poll question: Which city would you like to host our convention in 2008?
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 06:31 PM by Bleachers7
A fellow DUer posted an article that says there are 11 cities up for consideration. Which would you prefer?

The 11th city is Las Vegas. I think it's so ridiculous that I am not posting it. Vegas is not a good choice considering the pukes corruption issues. Have at it....

1. Other: Cleveland
Strong Dem base in a battleground state. Seems the best choice to me.

25. not NO
it would be like the repubs using new york 'cause of 911 and that is exactly how they'll spin it.

Personally (I'm obviously biased here) I would like to see it in Portland Maine. :-)

37. Portland would definitely be very cool
I'm thinking NO because there are so many states in the area that are going to go blue in 06 and 08 AND it will bring people to the area as well.

10. Cleveland is a good choice as well.
Somehow they didn't make the final 11 that were interested. I wonder if the DNC considered it.

3. Said Minneapolis
I will admit it is for somewhat selfish reasons. It is about a seven hour drive up there and would be nice to go there. But Denver would be a good choice too. We need that part of the country and a convention in Denver may just put Dems over the top.

Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 06:45 PM by KamaAina
starting the day the announcement is made. Build buzz around the convention by doing the right thing!

Historically the reason it's never happened is that few large N.O. hotels are unionized. With wages at an all-time high and businesses crying for workers, perhaps an organizing drive is in order?

15. New Orleans
The next convention should be In New Orleans.. it would help sow up Louisana and maybe arkansas in 2008, it would send the message that we havent given up on the South, that we care about poor people, etc. you know core Democratic Values.

Convention in New Orleans. Nominate a southerner. Bring some damn attention back to the convention and use it to build support in the south.

21. Phoenix and why:
Phoenix is hot during the summer yes.

However, it currently has a kick ass Governor recognized nationally for her competence, it is one of the most progressive states with regards to funding for campaigns, has a Democratic Mayor (even if he never acts like one) would be very inexpensive since it is summer and has been one of the places to be for all the candidates presidentially.

So having it in AZ would be good for everyone except those who do not like the heat but we have AC out here.

23. New Orleans, for obvious reasons.
It has nothing to do with how scenic your hometown is. For emotional reasons, New Orleans has to be the place.

Lets hope the DNC comes up with their national platform by then. /snark

26. That would be the best choice.
Will New Orleans be "rebuilt" enough to handle the crowds? On edit, I guess if they can do Mardi Gras they can do the convention.

I'd also like to see a convention on the west coast, and not in republican-loving orange county. I'm worried about California, with the lastest Diebold scandal and bush strong men moving in to shore up Arnold's campaign. I'd like to see the Democratic Party show some appreciation to California for her 55 electoral votes.

31. Given that the convention is where the platform is finalized.

Then I don't think it likely we will finalize the platform before then. Or would you rather Howard Dean dictate the platform and ignore the delegates elected by the people to the national convention?

34. Yup, we deserve it.
The state that gave the country Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy, Walter Mondale and Paul Wellstone. The state that hasn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1972 should host the convention. Besides Minneapolis, the City of Lakes is beautiful and the delegates would enjoy it.

39. New Orleans, BUT--
they need to tone it down from the way conventions usually go. The tone needs to be different, more serious, and there needs to be a clear and definitive statement made by the Democratic Party that they will-- a) help the people of New Orleans rebuild their lives, and not just from the effects of Katrina, but the many serious problems that plagued them before the storm ever hit (and this needs to translate to their larger national agenda as well), and b) build a new kind of federal government that really takes care of the American people in time of crisis--not one that leaves them hanging.

A New Orleans convention will be tricky, because it can't be trite, and it can't be glitzy, and it can't patronize--it has to be genuine, a genuine attempt to reach out to the people, not only of Louisiana, but of the American south. Southern Americans deserve economic stablity and clean air and all the other things we want just as much as everyone else in this country, and we need to reach out to them and show them that there is room in the Democratic party for them.
