I think this BS about Cheney leaving after the fall elections is just that...BS! Cheney doesn't care what anyone thinks of him, or how low his poll numbers are. He has a HUGH ego that will keep him there until Jan 09!

29. But that assumes he'll have a choice as to whether to step down... |
|
If the Libby/Plame investigation blows up in his face, and he becomes too much of a liability, they'll make him go whether he wants to or not, ego be damned

11. Congress CRitter from a state with a Repug Governor. |
|
Upon a Senatorial vacancy in matters of appointments the governor of the state appoints a replacement. So if Crashcart leaves, it will be a lunatic from a state with a Repug governor.
Upon the last round of rumors of Crashcart's departure many here were saying McCain would be appointed. Of course, that's nonsense. Not only would ChimpCo never appoint a moderate, a McCain Senatorial vacancy would allow Gov Napolitano (a Democrat) to appoint his successor.
Just for perverity's sake. I'll predict that it would be Katherine Harris.

16. Any Senator would jeopardize the Repug's hold on the majority |
|
An incumbent is a security mechanism used by each party to assure re election. If the incumbent is not known(which would be most appointees), then the race in the midterms would be uncomfortable close for them.

I voted for Allen, because I think he's the guy the GOP powers that be would most like to see take over from Bush. But given that Kaine (D) would pick the replacement....
Otoh, maybe they feel secure enough with Diebold that they're not worried about keeping their majority.

22. The only way he leaves the position of VP is if he dies |
|
You think there is anyone out there who can strong arm him? He probably has more dirt on those who would have to approach him then they even imagine, including that little turd Rove.
No, Cheney stays unless he WANTS to leave, and he won't leave unless he is comatose or dead.
Ask Bob Taft about leaving an elected postion...you think Cheney has less balls than Taft?

Then Governor Perry will choose Carol Keeton Strayhorn as new senator and that smoothes the way for Perry's own reelection.

If the Bush faction of the GOP sees the open VP slot as a chance to install their successor, they'll pick an easily influenced Bush insider -- my guess is for Rice.
But if the Bush faction thinks that the slime of the old VP will rub off on the new one, tarnishing his or her reputation, they'll pick the biggest threat in the 2008 presidential primary. Probably McCain.

I don't think Cheney is going to retire before the end of his term, but in the unlikely event a vp vacancy occurs, I don't think anyone with presidential ambitions will be named. There is too much ego involved -- Frist, Allen, McCain, Hagel (and that's just on the repub side) all are considering runs and are going to shit a brick unless whoever is nominated publicly disavows any intention of running in 2008). It might be Condi if she makes that pledge. But it also might be Daddy Bush -- he's not going to run, and it would be hard politically for either repubs or Democrats to oppose him based on his qualifications since he held the job before.
