Most Troops Want Swift US Pull-Out from Iraq

by Demetri Sevastopulo and Edward Alden

Most American troops in Iraq believe that the US should withdraw within the next year, according to the first poll of US military personnel in Iraq.

President George W. Bush, whose overall approval rating fell to a new low of 34 per cent this week, has repeatedly said the US would finish the mission in Iraq. But a Zogby International/Le Moyne College poll found that only 23 per cent of US troops believed that they should stay “as long as they are needed”.

Seventy-two per cent of troops said the US should withdraw within 12 months; 29 per cent said they should pull out immediately.

Snip...

A separate study on Tuesday from Globespan and the Program on International Policy Attitudes found that 33 of 35 countries polled believe the war in Iraq has increased the likelihood of terrorist attacks around the world.

1. This is the scary part:
"Despite the fact that Mr Bush has acknowledged that Iraq played no role in the September 2001 attacks, 85 per cent of troops said the US mission was mainly “to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the 9/11 attacks”, a result that Mr Zogby described as 'bewildering.'”

12. John Steinberg's article on the subject of fascism
Perhaps a bit of this would solve Mr Zogby's problem.

2. But, Katherine Harris said
"To a man, everyone I spoke to said please don't pull us out before we've finished our job!"

Somebody's lying here.

13. she used a different methodology than Zogby
I'm sure she's reviewing her sampling techniques right now in light of Zogby's results.

7. Where did you hear they voted for Mistah Boooosh?
I sure never heard that one.. They talked and talked about releasing the final data in the media, but somehow they spaced it out.

You could probably find some bogus numbers on a rightwing site somewhere, but as far as the actually tally..

Nada, zip, zilch.. didn't release it.

Speaking of troops though.. Go Band of Brothers!! (and Sisters too  )

5. Pro - you should add Kerry's 1yr withdrawal plan to your post. Amazing the
way media ignored it or downplayed it, but Kerry WENT to Iraq to talk to the men and the commanders on the ground and Iraqi parliament members. He KNEW what they needed and what they WANTED and came home and drafted a plan.

Media ignored it and then jumped on Murtha's plan to spin as "cut and run" for ttheir Bush masters.

After Iraq, Many Soldiers Seek Counseling

By CARLA K. JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer
Tue Feb 28, 4:00 PM ET

Snip...

Thirty-five percent of Iraq veterans received mental health care during their first year home, according to the study. In addition, 12 percent of the more than 222,000 returning Army soldiers and Marines in the study were diagnosed with a mental problem.

Nineteen percent of those back from Iraq reported mental health concerns, compared with 11 percent of those back from Afghanistan and 8.5 percent of those returning from other places, such as Bosnia.

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

Snip...

President Bush's budget plan includes a 6 percent increase in spending for the Department of Veterans Affairs. But some in Congress say that is not enough because the increase hinges on more than $1 billion in cuts in other VA spending and the approval of new fees and co-payments for some veterans.

Snip...

Medical authorities first accepted post-traumatic stress disorder as a psychiatric condition in 1980 at the urging of Vietnam veterans. A previous study by Hoge and his colleagues found 15 percent to 17 percent of soldiers returning from Iraq showed signs of the disorder, and many were reluctant to seek help because of the stigma attached to mental illness.
