Cynthia Mckinney just played the race AND gender card...
McKinney, speaking at a news conference where she was joined by singer Harry Belafonte and actor Danny Glover, said she understands that a case against her may be referred for prosecution but declared that she will be exonerated.

"Let me be clear. This whole incident was instigated by the inappropriate touching and stopping of me, a female black congresswoman," McKinney said. "I deeply regret that this incident occurred."

2. I've gotta admit
that press conference/rally made me really uncomfortable. I wish both sides could have just worked it out away from the public eye. Her refusal to apologize, and some of the language used at the press conference seemed a little over the top.

27. The mighty Wurlitzer spins on.
You can always tell by whether the story is played up, and by the name calling, whether the subject is among the anointed or not. Do you remember all the sympathetic bullshit written when Cheney shot his shooting buddy? Contrast that with this crap.

that results in a death, or kicks the door in of an innocent persons house, or wrongfully arrests someone, why is there not this same type of outrage?

Just askin'.

5. Sometimes the best are full of passionate intensity
I think McKinney has been under attack for quite a while and is letting off needed steam but the rovians will use the reaction they gained to swiftboat her.

I hope more people on the left will start looking into what McKinney has done for us. She is an unsung heroine.

Someone posted a link to prisonplanet with a C-Span video of McKinney's questioning of Rumsfeld on completely missing $2 trillion dollars that the Pentagon "lost" and it was more than worth the wait to load. The repig leader kept calling her "this young lady" to marginalize her and McKinney's passionate questioning and calling Rumsfeld and the Iraqi General on their lies including the lie by Rumsfeld at his last Congressional appearance to send McKinney information when he said he forgot the information to her questions which he never sent and his constant meme during the fierce and justified questioning by McKinney was that "he didn't remember" was a sight to behold.

6. Her politics are irrelevant.
The only thing that is relevant is whether or not she assaulted a cop. If she did, she should be arrested and charged. If she didn't , the video tape will clear her.

Why else this media circus to vilify McKinney based on false accusations?
I'm not so sure the video will be released at all. As long as it isn't released the RW noise machine can continue to vilify her in the court of public opinion.

it's just that in this day and age I hate to see ANYONE play the race or gender card... Rep. McKinney HAS done a lot of good work, and should be able to stand on her own merits without playing the race or gender card..

25. She was elected by people who supported her. She is a member of
Congress. She shouldn't have been treated that way. There are many congresscritters who are Racist...does that mean McKinney should have been grabbed by a cop? It probably was set up as harassment...since we know Dems are being targeted and Dems in both the house and Senate.

It's a serious one, and it's just wrong to claim it without some evidence.

32. And nothing happens to Rumsfeld for not replying to her

He doesn't have to because he doesn't really "see" or hear her. In his eyes she doesn't deserve a response.

We at DU should certainly understand that because that is the way that he treats US, Democrats.

Ralph Ellison's " The Invisible Black Man" comes to mind.

Let's change the title to Black Woman.

Now, we have a so called LIBERAL blog, with folks ready to really
SEE her in this instance and say she is playing the race card.

Interesting, I suppose we, as African Americans, should not dare to have someone in the public eye BE with us, and support US when we are in a tough situation.

I'm thrilled that Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte stood with her!

It instantly puts a picture in my mind of all the Civil Rights struggles when we stood tall and walked together when we were being accused of "braking the law."

8. the press conference was absurd, but ...
Edited on Sat Apr-01-06 07:51 AM by Neil Lisst
She is a House member. It's their job to know her. I know it must be confusing with all those black female congresswomen!

The Capitol Police have a duty to KNOW every member of congress. If she had been one of the white Republican women congresspersons, there's not a snowball's chance in hell the capitol police would have made this mistake, and zero chance they'd consider prosecuting.

She's a member of congress on the way to a vote. They can kiss her ass, and like it!

This has Republican stank all over it.

Their job is to protect and serve. That is why WE pay them. He was paid to protect her, he also should know who the members of congress are. Another whiny man who got his ego stepped on - WAAAA. I'll make her pay for making me look bad.

The press conference shows that McKinney is drenched in self-pity, and will blame others for her own actions.

And she's an anti-semite.

They create a lot of their own problems just with their attitudes. The whole situation wouldn't have happened if he acted in a professional manner....and what proof do you have that she is anti-semite? Also does being racist and or sexist trump what you claim is anti-semitism? I am sick of hearing that shit.....if someone thinks 9/11 was an inside job - they are antisemite - what the fuck....if you have personal bias and discover a cure for cancer - should we not accept it? What a crock of shit....

23. I'm not surprised
I've never liked Cynthia McKinney. Can't put my finger on exactly why, maybe because she's always seemed to be mostly about Cynthia McKinney - lots of ego, self-aggrandizing and hype there. We lived in the sliver of Atlanta in DeKalb County for 39 years, and she represented an adjoining district, so I'm somewhat familiar with her.

BTW, we were mostly represented by white Republican men, who were even worse. Just before we moved, redistricting gave our neighborhood to John Lewis. Would love to still have him as my congressman - admire him so much.

I haven't seen that at all. As for McKinney, although I've long supported and admired her, I was put off by her press conference yesterday. I wish the whole damned incident would just disappear.
There should have been no talk of arresting her, and I wish she hadn't upped the ante with that press conference.
