Is the immigration issue a gigantic red herring for 2006?
Look how little we're discussing Iraq now. It's much too early, but our focus is now away from the many mistakes and lies of the Bush Administration to this agenda-set "controversy" that enlivens the Republican base in 2006.

Will immigration reform initiatives appear on state ballots, much like gay marriage initiatives did in 2004, to entice Republicans to the polls?

Does anyone truly believe the Bush Administration intends on crafting viable immigration legislation? No!

Immigration always will be an important issue in the United States. Our current state of xenophobia introduced by the 2001 terror attacks and fear-mongering White House has aggravated issues like this. But Rove (the phony genius) knows that if his party doesn't go to the polls in November, their control of Congress is toast.

And if you have any doubt, consider this. Who introduced the immigration/border issue? George Bush and his paranoid conservative base.

2.  I think the immigration issue is very important. It is a real
hot button issue and definitely no red herring.

4. Correct, but the Republicans are exploiting the issue to draw conservative
voters to the polls. The half-handed legislation by the Bush Admin. only furthers corporate exploitation of migrant workers while not penalizing them for breaking the law.

My thought is: they brought it up and they want to score points by enlivening debate on 1% of the important issues of the day, while avoiding the other 99% where they have f'd up.

3. I was JUST about to post this same title!
Yes, it is a red herring. Of the highest order. Crafted with genius, too.

In addition to what you postulate, it also allows the repubs to appear to opppose Preznit Asshole.

No one is going to do one fucking thing about immigration. But it sure does fire up not only theior base, but ours as well. And many on our side will be four square behind keeping the 'wetbacks' out.

As they've framed it, this is a 'can't lose' issue that isn't even a social wedge. Oh sure ..... there are the bloviators like Tancredo, but all in all, it is a winner for them and at best a neutral for us ..... if not a loser. It is a real minefield .... and only they have the map ...... and the media to make the issue appear to be real.

Smoke and mirrors. That's all it is.

5. Great minds think alike, Hubs.
I just hope the smoke blows away by September of this year, when voters truly start paying attention.

6. what's left to talk about in Iraq?
illegal invasion and occupation, brought to us by liars and corporate thieves.

for years we look away as immigrates are exploited as slave labor.

illegal wire tapes. illegal imprisonment without representation without charges.

this is ameriKa. we got what we deserve. we watch our impotent apathetic representatives in DC pretend to give a shit. it took a long time to get here, but this IS a black hole. we have killed thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan. we crapped all over South America in the 80's.

bush has been proven to be a liar, a thief and a coward. he disregards the constitution. all we get is an "ongoing investigation". halliburton and the carlyle group are laughing their asses off as we march and demonstrate in the streets.

i been fighting since the 60's and i am weary. our votes are not even counted, yet we pretend this is a democracy. these days make nixon look like a hero.

this is our day. april fools.

am i going to give up? HELL NO!

and i hope my fellow DUers won't either.
