New thread: The $17.76 campaign to support Russ Feingold

Russ Feingold has shown extraordinary courage and fortitude in defending our civil rights and defending the constitution against a lawbreaking president. A lot of us have wanted to show support and some different ideas have been kicked around. Someone came up with the idea of sending in $17.76 to the Progressive Patriots Fund- and its a good one. All you have to do is contribute $17.76 to http://www.progressivepatriotsfund.com / and post it here or send me a pm and I will put your name on the list. My part in this is spreading the word and collecting the screen names.

Although I said previously that I might want to present something to him at a listening session in Wisconsin sometime between April 8 and 12, I talked to someone from the PPF today and for campaign finance laws, this is not a good idea (even though it would only be symbolic). So the timeline on this is still wide open. I have no action planned and this is simply online fundraising, thats all.

Lots of other suggestions have been made regarding sending flowers or some other more visible, media-friendly show of support. If someone else wants to organize something to do in DC or with DailyKos that would be great. I'll keep the list and pass it along to whoever does that.

This is a good fund to contribute to because it is also being used to support other progressive candidates. The PPF had noticed the $17.76 contributions coming in! I wanted to let them know what we are up to and I will work with them on getting it out to the press as appropriate.

The best thing that can happen is that we raise a lot of money and get this fundraising idea to snowball beyond DU. Tell friends, call in to Air America, post it on other websites. Democratic Underground can be the place the $17.76 campaign started before it spread around the country!

8. Do you know who first came up with this idea?

I tried searching DU for 17.76 and $17.76 and for some reason got nothing. It would be nice to credit who first had this idea. With just a little promotion, this could snowball into something huge. Can you imagine more and more democrats/progressives giving to their PAC or candidate of their choice in denominations of $17.76. Might be $1.77. But it might be $177.60. And it might be $1776.00! You get to make a statement twice. Putting your money where your mouth is - literally and symbolically.
