Rendell Leads Swann By 10 Points In Gov Race (Quinnipiac)
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 09:35 AM by BurgherHoldtheLies
April 5, 2006 - Rendell Leads Swann By 10 Points In Gov Race, Quinnipiac University Pennsylvania Poll Finds; Blacks Back Rendell 6 - 1

Democratic incumbent Gov. Ed Rendell leads Republican challenger Lynn Swann, the former Pittsburgh Steeler, 47 - 37 percent in his race for reelection, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This is virtually unchanged from the results of a February 15 poll.

In this survey, Gov. Rendell leads Swann 74 - 15 percent among Democrats and 50 - 28 percent among independent voters. Swann leads 63 - 21 percent among Republicans. Men back Rendell 50 - 35 percent, while women back him 45 - 38 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

"Gov. Rendell continues to lead Lynn Swann by a double-digit margin even though both his approval rating and favorability have dropped. Mr. Swann's favorable rating also has dropped slightly - likely because of his fumbles in answering questions on key issues - but half the voters of Pennsylvania still say they don't know enough about him to form an opinion," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"While maintaining strength in the West, Mr. Swann has failed to penetrate Rendell's stronghold in Philadelphia and its suburbs. The governor is vulnerable on the state budget and related tax issues," Richards added.

Now that's more like it. Swann :dunce: is as qualified to be Governor as my preschooler.

4. And my preschooler can sing some really cute songs too
Despite being a resident of Western PA and a lifelong Steeler fan, I would NEVER vote for an inexperienced, unqualified and uninformed individual as my Governor just because he was a Steeler. Hopefully the Steeler fans in mostly Democratic Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) will also see it that way.

Thankfully, the largest population in PA resides in Philadelphia and they will be even less impressed with Swann's "credentials".

10. Swann might gain a few vote from Pittsburgh & African-Americans
but he will lose votes bigtime in rural Pennsylvania where unfortunately racism is pretty commonplace. Plus the fact that the other state-wide election is Rick Santorum will hurt him too. Santorum is in the bottom-five for least popular senators and Swann will be catogorized as part of the Santorum agenda. And for what votes Swann could gain in Pittsburgh & the African-AMerican communities will be lost because neither of those groups can stand Santorum.

And btw, Philadelphia area could care less that Swann played for the Steelers. We're Eagles fans and thus negates the 'star-quality' of being a hall-of-fame wide-receiver from the super bowl champ Pittsburgh Steelers

12. And, for once I will say: Thank you Philly for kicking our asses...
at least when it comes to getting out the votes next November. ;)

Philly should easily trump the Western PA turnout for Swann.

14. Hey, you make PA look good in sports
we'll make PA look good in politics

Without getting trounced by the anti-Casey folks - I think Bob Casey would only help Rendell get elected in almost the opposite way that Santorum would hurt Swann. I still don't understand the appeal of Casey Democrats in Western PA (BTW - I would include John Murtha in that - he's pretty conservative outside the war issue). But what we need to do is push the "VOTE STRAIGHT DEMOCRAT" mentality in November.

I have a feeling if Casey should win the primary that he and Rendell will campaign the state together because each candidate's strengths makes up for the other ones weakness. Swann campaigning with Santorum would benefit him about as much as campaigning with Hitler or Pol Pot.

5. Since Swann's so-called appeal is as a Black Gop'er, it seems...
...strange that the poll doesn't reveal any data regarding the inclination of Blacks to vote for him. I cannot believe they did not ask questions to ascertain such data, given the reason for Swann's candidacy.

I'd suspect Swann did more poorly than expected among Black voters.

9. Blacks Back Rendell 6 - 1 (It's in the title and article)
Seems like PA voters aren't being swayed by either the Steeler connection or the first black Governor schtick...Swann is a Bushbot first and foremost.

15. Anyone who thinks african-americans will disregard their heritage
just to vote for a Black person is a dumbass.

There were polls circulating around at how Bush has about a 3% approval rating with the African-American community. The only campaign ad that Ed Rendell needs to run is an add showing these pictures

Any reasons that African-Americans might actually contemplate voting for Swann because he's black will be tossed out the door

11. Swann's platform seems to have 2 planks:
1. Dems take blacks for granted (as opposed to the GOP which treats them....how?)

2. Reproductive rights should be decided by the goverment, not the doctor.

Just wait until Big Dog campaigns for Rendell.

18. Trust me - Fast Eddie will bring the Big Dog to Pennsylvania
A stop in Pittsburgh and a stop in Philadelphia. Trust me, after that Lynn Swann is toast. What's he going to do? Bring in Bush? Dig up the Dead body of Ronald Reagan? Go campaign with Rick Santorum.

THis is cakeway. Republicans gave us this governor race because trust me - I thought we were in for a tough race if Bill Scranton was the republican nomination

24. Someone also pointed out during the superbowl time
that the owner of the Steelers was a very popular big Democrat. So, in addition to Clinton whose AA support was always very high, he might be able to counter some of Swann's popularity as a football player.

Also, isn't Teresa Heinz kerry very popular in the Pittsburg area because of the Heinz foundation's work. Maybe she and Chris Heinz can appeal to John Heinz's former supporters.

23. Hard for me to trust a poll with internals like that
"Men back Rendell 50 - 35 percent, while women back him 45 - 38 percent."

That simply doesn't compute, based on current nationwide gender voting trends, or Pennsylvania results of the past decade or more from my data base. It's so bizarre I put no stock in the poll at all.

Just look at the 2004 presidential race in Pennsylvania. Bush led Kerry among men, 51-48, while women preferred Kerry, 54-46.

Frankly, it's amazing the poll isn't condemned by the mainstream media when it spits out ridiculous internals like that.

26. With the new Independent factor in that race, I'd love to hear from
Pennsylvania DUers on how it's going.

Or what might happen.

I'd prefer you guys' take to the MSM on this one.

Well, not JUST on this one!
