Sickening display by Matthews with Tom Delay...not meant for broadcast
From the Huffington Post...

"To see just how grateful Chris Matthews was for getting the Tom DeLay scoop, and what DeLay may think of Hillary Clinton, go here. Thanks to the usual source gods."

178. It was an obvious fabrication...
Matthews has implied on several occasions that he is a Democrat. He never hesitates to tell us his Democrat credientials... like when he brags about having worked for former House speaker "Tip" O,Neill. He would never do such a thing. </SARCASM>

Matthews is a corporate whore who will shill for for the Bush administration's policies which benefit his employer GE/MSNBC. MSNBC is nothing more than a corporate propaganda outlet masquerading as a "news" channel.

who feels like he's being played with. matthews does a good job of getting Delay's past his initial, defensive reaction and into a comfort zone where he literally makes the misogynist remark of the year... recorded... downloaded... in all its glory...

thank you tweety. you've made my week.

Tweety wasn't trying to calm Delay, he was too busy blowing him. There was nothing there but good old fashioned ass kissing. I'm glad Delay made an even bigger ass out of himself (didn't think that was possible!) but Matthews wasn't setting him up by calming him down. Matthews really IS a GOP suck-ass and this provides more proof of that fact.

Sickening.......absolutely sickening! :puke:

but I've heard the criticism of him in the past. Quite frankly, I never observed anything too distressing from him. That's why I'm glad I tuned into him last night with DeLay. Jeesh! Any doubts I had about the validity of his critics is dispelled now! I'd bet after the show they went out to dinner and made weekend plans together. Hardball? How about Gasball.

How appropriate is that for a journalist who is supposed to be hard-hitting and objective to be saying that right before he interviews the dirtbag?

THIS clip does more to destroy the myth of the "liberal media", including Matthews, than anything I have seen.

progressives.

Those of us who think that they can take the party to the center or center right and every other Dem will just go along because the candidate is Dem and not Repub have another thing coming.

We who are true progressives will not support a pro life candidate or a repub lite candidate. We will stay home and not vote. You had better wake up to that fact. We have waited far too long to get a progressive movement in this country. It will have to start at the grass roots level and that's where we will put our power. I will NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! vote for a center right Dem. You might just as well run two repubs.

So think about that when you pick your nominee.

according to actual voting records. I don't think you're being very realistic to think that anyone will be elected who is more progressive than she is, with the possible exception of Obama (who ranks slightly higher on progressive issues, but who some people here also claim is too "center.")

"I will NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! vote for a center right Dem."

I'd be disappointed to have the nominee be someone I felt was not progressive, but I will NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! give the pukes my vote by staying home.

I find your claim "we who are true progressives" thoroughly insulting. Who are you to tell us we're not true progressives if we don't vote (or NOT vote) the way you do? I consider myself quite left of center, but I would never presume to tell anyone else that I was a better progressive or liberal than they were.

Primaries are one thing, but stating that you will not support Democratic candidates when push comes to shove really pisses me off.

112. Well Put.
I am about as far left as anybody, but I will always vote for the lesser of two evils that stand a chance, which 99.99% of the time is dem, even if a dem candidate is repub-lite. Liberals do not help their cause by NOT voting. Such a protest does far more harm than good to any progressive trend that might exist. To suggest otherwise is to be blind. We don't have enough time for a slow growth in consciousness. Certainly seek growth in consciousness but please vote dem while you wait for the enlightenment. Dems certainly reside to the left of repubs. I get angry when I hear folks say that there is little difference between a repub and a dem. If you look at environmental records alone, let alone other issues, such sentiments are patently absurd. The trend is obvious. Help the trend.

104. I Don't Hate Hillary Either, Just Don't Want Her As A Nominee!
It's pretty simple for me. Repukes have already crowned her the front runner and can't wait to use the "Liberal" label on her. In fact, she's hardly a Liberal, hell Bill wasn't even a Liberal.

Bill Clinton just knew how to close a deal! However, after closing he did something that made many of the Wing Nuts jump for joy! The result of his Monica, et al escapades was to UNITE them like never before. The Clintons are very savvy and effective... I just don't want the Repukes getting another bite of the apple!

If Hillary is the nominee it just stands as a reminder to the Wing Nuts, and they have little to cheer about right now. Democrats will just be handing them an opportunity to REHASH Clinton all over again. Not only will Hillary be Pilloried... Bill will be right there in the Mess-O-Things!

They haven't let go of him YET!!

the dems voted for this war and the patriotic act just like the reps. they roled over on almost every issue when what they should have done is vote enmasse against the repubs. they are just playing politics to try to gain power again. this is why we do need a >2 party system and campaign finance reform, etc. i am a registered dem, i voted for gore and kerry, both of who should have fought harder. we need all the current group (rep and dem) flushed out (save for one or two).

171. Neither Kerry nor Gore would have used 9/11 as an excuse to start
a war against Iraq.

Unfortunately, most of the Democrats were afraid of public opinion if they opposed Bush. But what if they had voted en masse against the war? Nothing would have been different. Bush didn't need their votes to do whatever he wanted, because he had majorities in both the House and the Senate.

If we had a system like Canada's, where the moderate and far left could cobble together a majority, that would be great. That's worth working for. But at this moment in time, every progressive vote that deserts the Democrats just helps bring about another Republican win and puts us further down the path toward a theocratic dictatorship.

175. Two things: Dems DIDN'T "Vote for war" And
Hillary is the Republican Wet Dream Democratic Nominee.

Please stop using the Republican talking point that the Democrats "voted for the war." They no more voted for the war than they "saw the same intelligence as Bush."

The Authorization To Use Force was a conditional measure. It was conditioned on Saddam refusing to allow inspections. I remember thinking at the time that Bush's actions in response to Saddam allowing inspections would show whether all our suppositions about his war mongering soul were true or not. Sure enough... he invaded anyway. But that doesn't mean the Dems voted for war in Iraq. Their biggest mistake was in not following their guts regarding the lack of honor in Bush, and being bullied into voting for the AUF as some misguided signal of Patriotism.

Hillary has been the Republican choice for the Democratic nominee LITTERALLY since January of 2001. Shortly after the inauguration, when I could still stomach listening to Hannity, and O'Reilly for the purpose of knowing my enemy, these jerks were starting the Hillary rumors. The MSM picked up THEIR happy talk. This Republican wet dream has just gained momentum over the years to the point where it is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. Hillary as Nominee would just give all the misogynists, racists, fascists, war mongering corporatist, evangelicals a rallying point for there anger and the Backlash will continue.

I hope and pray that Hillary will realize this and go against her history of doing what is best for HER and do what is best for the Democratic party and stay out of the race entirely. I doubt she will act in anyone's interests but her own, so I will work HARD against her in the primary. But I will say as much as she represents just more DLC anti-progressive leadership, I will hold my nose and vote for her is the nations democrats are stupid enough to hand her the nomination.

That Delay "likes him" is no surprize....they're two peas in a festering, fetid, diseased pod, the lowest of the low. 176. Its obvious why she is talked up by the right wing
They push her as the "front runner" because the know for certain, and they are CORRECT, that Hillary as Nominee will produce the ground swell of hatred that they have relied on to hold onto power since 1994. It is no coincidence that since 1994 every national election cycle has seen more and more sexist, homophobic, misogynistic campaign themes from the Republican slime machine.

Hillary is a built in rallying cry for the retards that make up the core of Republican voters to once again vote for people who have the interests of the corporations and the rich as top priorities and who wish the middle class would die off so they can have even more cheap labor.

180. I do so agree with that last statement!
And for me, that gives cause for hope still. It seems that the Repukes are becoming ever more shrill and desperate as scandal after crime after scandal makes it even into the MSM and Americans of every stripe begin to make their opinions of Bush&Co heard.

The more the various polls reveal the truth of public approval ratings clear, the larger the gap becomes between what the Repukes are saying and the truth as citizens speak it. Excellent!

We Dems here in Tulsa just experienced some gratification as the voting in local elections this past Tuesday booted out the Repuke mayor and put a Dem back in, and many other candidates/issues went Dem instead of Repuke. If only the election process can be salvaged and therefore representative of actual citizen opinions, I think we'll keep seeing this trend grow!

(Please, please, I hope I hope...)

Edited on Fri Apr-07-06 02:28 PM by monarch
This is the first post that I can find that describes it as having been leaked. Does anybody know the answer to my question? I have clicked on every link I can find (and googled) and I can't find the first time the source of the tape is set forth. Maybe it's my googling skills. I did go to Huffingtonpost but I didn't see any discussion about the provenance of the tape. Are people just concluding that it was leaked from the found object reference, or was there a more substantive discussion someplace else of how Shearer obtained the tape?

Oh, and Tweety insisting that he owes Delay for the scoop? I wonder how he plans to repay the debt. He should be kicked off the air.

27. Not that I'm aware of. Matthews is telling Delay about a focus
group he's heard about -- says he'll send the info to Delay. He says that Kerry came out well, but that Edwards wasn't liked and that Hillary came off as a "know it all." Then Delay laughs and says "Nothing worse than a woman know-it-all" -- and then immediately loses the smile and looks around. . . as if he suddenly realized that was a DUMB thing to say.

53. It is a report on a focus group that Frank Luntz put together-
I read it on mydd.com (I think or it might have been Kos go back at check some tags at both sites I seem to remember it was in a pdf format

It was significant because Luntz and Boehner don't get along AT ALL and Luntz was just invited to go talk to some dems - the implication being that Luntz is going to freelance or work for us now

While I don't want her running -- I agree with those folks who say she'll suffer the slings of the Clinton-haters, I want her to gather enough power and propose enough substantive changes in the democratic platform that they have to deal with her. Tom, meanwhile, you will hopefully be home in Sugarland, (or will you be in Arlington, sprucing up your lobbying resume?) spraying Mrs. Haversham's house for cockroaches!

the most successful administrations ever...left us with money in the bank, more cops on the street, less on welfare, a solid infrastructure....FEMA included.....good centrists..The worst thing we feared under Clinton when we were all celebrating ringing in the year 2000 was Y2K (Clinton had set up a panel of experts not cronies to make sure we "transitioned")Clinton was loved in the world and seen as a peacemaker....if you make weapons thats bad for biz....BUT the corporate tax rate under Clinton was 34% under Bu$h....7%...Republicans are the party of "free enterprise".....we now live in a Corportocracy.....big business runs the country not the people.....the constitution is a piece of paper to Bush....he only respects money and power not the rights of the people.....at least that's how I see it. Millions have died defending our freedom from tyrants and we have one who calls himself a president......

181. That's the answer I'd guess.
He likes to remind us all that he worked for (or is it "with"?) Tip O'Neill ... so maybe he "applied" for a cushy position in the Clinton administration and was not hired. Or worse yet, not even acknowledged. Anyone know if he indicated either way how he leaned in Clinton's first Presidential race?

I stopped watching Tweety a few years ago, just couldn't take it anymore.

I think we need a smiley for "pulling out my hair in exasperation!"

173. I just emailed NBC and MSNBC powers-that-be
this letter:

Dear Sirs:
How embarrassing for you that the host of the absurdly named "Hardball" was caught on camera telling a politician, "I owe you one, no, I owe you two." I have been a Hardball viewer for about 7 years, and have been bewildered by what has happened with Matthews. He is now nothing more than a tool of the Republicans, and he needs to be fired for that comment to Tom DeLay.

You no longer have even the pretense of a fair "reporter" in Matthews - that is why his ratings are tanking and Olbermann's are increasing. The idea of any serious journalist telling a politician "I owe you," is anathema to any idea we still have of a free and objective press.

139. Here's a thought...
Hey Tweety...why not try sticking to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics for a change. Here's a link for a little refresher course...

http://www.spj.org/ethics_code.asp

Preamble
Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society's principles and standards of practice.

Here's their mission statement...

The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.

To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the U.S. Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives, and their local and national communities.

It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely and understandable manner.

It is the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists:

To promote this flow of information.
To maintain constant vigilance in protection of the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press.
To stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.
To foster excellence among journalists.
To inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists.
To encourage diversity in journalism.
To be the pre-eminent, broad-based membership organization for journalists.
To encourage a climate in which journalism can be practiced freely.
******************************************************************

Why not write the ethically-challenged treasonous rat bastard and express your disdain personally...

To follow up on the earlier comments, I'm with Cindy Sheehan--if Hillary can't say yet it's time to withdraw from Iraq, she won't ever get my vote. And frankly, the anti-first amendment stuff (flagburning) is both stupid and disgusting. Living in a red state, I just couldn't ever see voting for her. I hope Ron Paul runs for Prez, just to light a fire under Dem butts.

However, seems like celebrations should be the order of the day. Tom Delay doesn't think all the voter fraud, gerrymandering, moneylaundering etc. the GOP is capable of getting him the Cuntlick TX district seat. 2006 should be a good year.

And let me tell you, it made me angry. Not that I was a Chris Matthews fan to begin with, but just the nakedness of it all. Delay is a despicable piece of filth, and to hear Matthews fawning over him like he's some kind of rock star made me want to puke.

We all got a peek behind the curtain, and it was uglier than I had imagined. Matthews is incredibly partisan, and he has no fig leaf to hide behind anymore. "I would have honored an embargo. Let me suck your cock, Tommy... please please please."

What a tool. And Delay's crack about women? What an asshole he is.

:puke:

185. That clip almost made me feel sorry for Delay
and do you know how hard that is to make me feel? The seeming glee which Matthews showed at getting the story, and the thing about favors..It seemed so sleezy, like Delay was just another tool for ratings and not even a human being.

And this is coming from a person who thinks Delay should be behind bars, but I have compassion even for criminals. It just looked so phony, so obvious.

I have lost all respect for Matthews.
