His salad days are over. He's tossed now. "$50-an-hour-to-pick-lettuce"
Sen. John McCain threatened on Tuesday to cut short a speech to union leaders who booed his immigration views and later challenged his statements on organized labor and the Iraq war.

snip

But he took more questions, including a pointed one on his immigration plan.

McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.

Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain's job offer.

"I'll take it!" one man shouted.

McCain insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season. "You can't do it, my friends."

Some in the crowd said they didn't appreciate McCain questioning their work ethic.

4. I've always maintained that McCain would . . .
Self-destruct on the campaign trail. I saw all sorts of signs of incipient autoimmolation the last time he ran around the block.

I still think I'm right.

7. That neo-con line pisses me off - "work that no one else will do"
BULL SHIT.
My father worked 30 years in a Meat Packing plant, he made damn good money until Reagan began busting the unions.
The plant he work closed in 1980, laying off 600 people making $50K - $60K a year. That was good money in 1980.
The plant re-opened on year later, non-union labor. Wages went from $12/hr + to $5.00/hr.
They didn't even offer work to those who once worked there, the entire work force was brought in from Mexico. Not one legal among them.
I know for a fact that thousands of people would have applied for those jobs:
    1. If they had been offered.
    2. If the wages would have been a living wage.

This is all about the corporations not wanting to pay living wages.

17. You're absolutely correct, and a question...
What was the attitude towards the union after this happened? I had a relative that went through a very similar experience at a meatpacking plant, and to this day he hates all unions, blames THEM for losing his job.

:wtf:

10. I would go out into the fields RIGHT NOW
for $50 an hour. McCain has obviously lost it if he thinks Americans won't work for "those jobs" for "those wages." He's right, I won't pick lettuce for $2.50 an hour, because it's not a livable wage! It's not that I can't do the work!

18. And be mindful of McCain's subtext
You American workers are lazy and don't work very hard.

Well Mr. McCain, that may be true where you live nowadays, but I know a lot of people bustin' their ass at two and even three jobs, and they'd be thrilled to make about 8½ times what they make now. They might even have a chance to sit down with their kids in the evening and talk about how their day went for $50 an hour.

Elitist, imperialist pig.

25. did he really mean 50 DOLLARS an HOUR?
or 50 CENTS an hour? or 50 dollars a DAY?

either of those suck, but 50 dollars an hour is $104,000/year.

i think i'd pick lettuce for that.

sounds like johnny got flustered & used hour when he meant day.

28. in 60s RW said Mexicans were short, thus close to the ground, so they
could bend over very easily......Americans were too tall to bend easily in the farm fields (IMO, there was also a subtext that Americans are proud and do not bend).......oh for the days of Cesar Chavez
