NEWSVIEW: Leak-Hating President, As Leaker

NEWSVIEW: Leak-Hating President, As Leaker

By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - President Bush insists a president "better mean what he says." Those words could return to haunt him.

After long denouncing leaks of all kinds, Bush is confronted with a statement — unchallenged by his aides — that he authorized a leak of classified material to undermine an Iraq war critic.

In September 2003, Bush said he was distressed by the CIA leak case. "If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action," he said.

"The president all the time was looking for himself," Sen. John Kerry, Bush's vanquished 2004 presidential challenger, said on the "Imus in the Morning" radio and television show.

Critics label Bush hypocrite for authorizing leak

President had condemned other disclosures, but White House says situations differ

WASHINGTON - Democrats called President Bush a hypocrite Friday for authorizing the leak of sensitive intelligence before arguing that other leaks endangered United States, but the White House said there was a sharp distinction between the episodes.

The president's condemnation of unknown individuals' subsequent leaks to the same newspaper, about his authorization of a secret eavesdropping program without search warrants, could have tipped off terrorists to American spy operations, the spokesman said.

The White House and its critics worked Friday to address information from court documents, released this week, disclosing that Libby told a grand jury that Bush permitted him through Vice President Dick Cheney to leak information from a National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq.

Snip...

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., Bush's 2004 opponent, said the president's effort to find leakers in Washington "needs to go no further than a mirror."

5. He is the opposite of everything he says.....
He speaks out against leaking, yet is a leaker.
He speaks against "legislating from the bench," yet he legislates from the Oval Office.
He speaks out for Christianity, yet he and his staff are potty-mouths and liars.

There are five years of examples from which to choose.
