The Five-Letter Word to End War--Draft
Tell A Friend

by Missy Comley Beattie

http://www.opednews.com

What are we going to do to stop the messianic president, George W. Bush, from blowing Iran to bits to further his and Mommy Dearest’s belief that he was born to save the world? How are sane people going to stop an avalanche of obsession from smothering Democracy? What can we do to bring our troops home and ensure peace?

A draft. That’s the answer. Only if we reinstate conscription will Americans march in the streets to protest war. That’s when our electorate will be affected by the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), the plan for world domination that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Rice are forcefully peddling. Only then will soccer moms and T-ball dads awaken from their complacency and say, “Not my child.”

For three years now, most Americans have expected someone else’s children to fight this ill-conceived, unconstitutional war in Iraq—a war that is hidden from consciousness because the powers that rule refuse to show the flagged-draped coffins, arriving at Dover. But the bottom line, the distillate, is simple to understand: If you are unwilling to fight or send your own children to this war of choice, then, don’t advocate that others volunteer. It’s so simple. If you truly believe that the occupation of Iraq is a noble cause, then, go immediately to the nearest recruitment station and encourage your children to do the same. If you think our troops are fighting for your freedoms, enlist now. And if you are already in the service of this country, ask yourselves this question: Would I want my own children to choose the armed forces as a career at this time?

8. If You Believe that Kids of the Ruling Class Will Ever Be Drafted...
...perhaps I can interest you in purchasing this fine New York landmark.

The Brooklyn Bridge
...special for you, today only...

Supporting any kind of draft on the assumption that it will be "fair"
is quite a bit worse than "buying the Brooklyn Bridge" from some swindler.
It won't cost you a few thousand bucks, it will cost you your kids.
And my sister's kids. I'm really glad I don't have any kids right now.
When they run out of kids, they'll come for us.

They have contained our right to protest to the point where Dear Leader
never has to see or hear a dissenting voice. They have muzzled the media, and taken away
our vote. The only freedom that we still have that affects their ability to wage war
is the freedom not to fight in it. We must oppose any effort to take that away

2. The rich kids would get college deferments
and middle class kids are having a hard time affording college nowadays.

14. Disabled Profile, So I Can't Look Up YOUR Age, hmmmm
everybody between 20 and 40 years old

I don't want to think of what Dear Leader and Darth Cheney would do with an army that large.

and what better way to do away with all of those annoying civil liberties than to draft
everyone. All that fine stuff in the Constitution really will be just a scrap of paper then.
All we'll have is whatever privileges the "Uniform Code of Military Justice" sees fit to grant us.

with NO EXCEPTION except for physical disabilities!!!

like the boil on Rush Limballs' ass.

There is no such thing as a fair draft. Never has been, never will be.

3. The eight letter word about this article: BULLSHIT
The draft didn't end Vietnam. The scions of the rich and famous never went there unless they volunteered for it like Kerry did. Most ended up with Gore's sort of job away from the action, even though they volunteered. Rich papas will protect their heirs against the heir's wishes every time.

Anyone who thinks a draft will be fairly administered in this country (or any other, really) is completely off his/her rocker. It never has been and never will be.

The all volunteer army is working exactly the way it's supposed to be, with volunteers getting scarcer and scarcer during the reign of a madman who starts unpopular and unwinnable wars and fucks them up completely.

Missy needs to read some history so she won't look quite so stupid when she starts giving poisonous prescriptions to end war.

4. Not this stupid fucking nonsense again.......
This has absolutely got to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I am constantly amazed at the utter and complete stupidity of this idea.....

Thankfully , those who believe this crap are few and far between.

5. My brother was in the Army 20 years,
including two tours in Viet Nam, and he's discouraged all his kids from enlisting. I think the only reason we don't have a draft now is because of the proposed draft law (did it get passed?) that closes student deferments and basically would force rich kids to don uniforms.

6. Lack of a Draft is All That Is Holding WarpedResident** Back
To implement PNAC's plans for world domination, or even to invade Iran,
they need a draft -- actually more like a general mobilization.
But the people don't want a draft -- everybody knows that.
What to do? Start up the draft and blame the DEMOCRATS, Of course!

With their control of the media, they can do just that.
All they need are some Democrats who can be swindled into supporting the draft.
Put them on TV, then sell it as a Democratic program.
Then they get their draft, and we get the blame.
We would be finished as a political force in this country

We had massive anti-war demonstrations in '02 and '03 -- as big as
any during the Vietnam war. Why did they end? Because they didn't work.
They helped us all to see that we were not alone, but they didn't stop the war.

A draft will bring some people out into the streets, but it will also give
this wannabe dictator far too much power over us. He would eventually draft
EVERYONE who isn't a corporate big-wig or Repub politician. He'd have his
martial law by the simple expedient of militarizing everyone and everything.
The CEOs wouldn't mind having a conscripted labor force -- forbidden to strike
(that would be desertion) and forced to accept whatever wages, hours, and
working conditions they chose to impose. They HAVE discussed the use of
conscription in this way.

And war. He's the "War President". He wants/needs war.

A draft would not end this war. It would expand it to engulf the
whole middle east if not the whole world.

Even if a draft never gets enacted, ANY support for a draft by Democrats
could be picked up by the Republican Noise Machine and turned into the
"Dean Scream" of the next election.

No draft. No way.

9. That article is written horribly.
Its all over the place and never makes the case for a draft beyond stating the opinion that the draft will end the war as fact.

13. Messianic is right. Batshit crazy, too.
That bothers me most. He's hellbent to use bigger and more powerful bombs. Like most addicts, he's reached a level where Afghanistan and Iraq can't give him the same high any more, so he needs a BIGGER HIGH.

Enter Iran.

He envisions "turning" Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan into western democracies where statues of the Great Liberator, George W. Bush, litter the countryside.

He's nuts.
