My respect for Dean has just increased greatly...
http://www.reuters.com/printerFriendlyPopup.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=4266802

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Sometimes a breast is just a breast.
Howard Dean, a physician and a Democratic presidential candidate, on Monday dismissed as "silly" a government inquiry into whether indecency rules were broken during the broadcast of the Super Bowl halftime show when pop diva Janet Jackson's bodice was ripped to expose her right breast.

"I find that to be a bit of a flap about nothing," the former Vermont governor said. "I'm probably affected in some ways by the fact that I'm a doctor, so it's not exactly an unusual phenomenon for me."

*snip*

"I don't find it terribly shocking relative to some of the things you can find on standard cable television," he added. "I think the FCC probably has a lot of other things they should be pursuing."

That the good Doctor will not apologize anytime when there is clear and uncontroversial evidence that Clark did at one point praise the Chimp not less than two years ago.

I don't care if he's a Democrat. Further evidence tells me otherwise and it is no wonder why most conservative states like AZ and NM which has military bases have overall support for Clark.

18. So, someone..
is a Republican based on fleeting praise for a sitting President, but espousing a liberal agenda all day long for months on end, coupled with on the record liberal positions on 3 seperate wars does not make one a Democrat?

You can't have it both ways. If talk makes someone a Republican, talk should also make someone a Democrat.

14. some girl's breast is no big deal in an appropriate setting
that being one that people can choose to view or not as they wish.

Having it displayed in that setting is totally inappopriate. For taht matter the entire half time show was largely inappropriate as family entertainment.

The NFL was obviously looking for a way to prepare a new generation of people to carry this cash cow forward as the existing base who have been picking up the tab are greying.

Hope those 18-24 year olds are prepared to start paying the big bucks pretty soon, not so sure the old farts will be that anxious to come back.

on edit: If Timberlake committed sexual assault on Janet Jackson, she should file charges. And not with the FCC.

45. per Ms Jackson...
he was permitted to remove the topmost layer leaving the red material beneath (you can see what she is referring to on the other side in the pictures). This was agreed to by her, MTV and the network. Ergo the "costume malfunction". I guess ole Justin just doesn't know his own strength, or didn't care.

No consent.

Criminal charges should already have been made minimally by Houston PD. But this has national implications as well.

The sight of Janet Jackson's nipple offends you to the point of wanting charges filed against Justin Timberlake for accidently ripping her dress during a performance? In an earlier post you even stated that had your child been watching you would have filed suit, yourself. Can you not see how irrational these posts of yours sound?

25. What's inappropriate about breasts?
Why should the female breast be offensive to families when its one of the first sights most children see? When it comes to nudity, I'd say that if someone is so hung up that they're offended by the human body it's their problem to deal with. We need to stop going along with the idea that the body is sinful.

63. If it's consensual, it's not rape.
Not even a prelude to it. But I guess anytime progressives talk about the prudish and hypocritical stance our society takes towards the human body there'll be someone who stands up and screams "feigned aggravated sexual assault" or something to that effect.

At least I can rejoice in the fact that I've apparently joined "the hip hop crack crowd", or should I be complaining that I've been tarred with a racist comment?

As for your 10 year old daughter, I wouldn't presume to tell you how to raise her, but since you felt obligated to bring her into the discussion, aren't you more concerned about the portrayal of women in the beer commercials than a single breast briefly flashed from a distance?

I didn't watch the super bowl or the ads but my husband said the ads(and Jon Stewart played one) about erectile dysfunction, a horny chimp making a pass at a human and the suggestive dancing were at least as offensive. Not to mention the male streaker. My issue is that its the morality concern that they are enraged about not the effect media consolidation is having on democracy. I mean lets focus on the important issues.

I feel sorry for people who get so uptight over a normal body part.

What does bother me is the idea of Justin reaching across her and tearing that breast piece off in the first place. THAT was not appropriate and I don't care for the message that sends that some guy can expose a female like that.

I watched the video and I realize it was staged, so it's not like she didn't know it was coming and consented to it.

60. such hyperbole
why defend janet and timberlake and cbs and mtv? They are adults and they knew exactly what they were doing.

As far as violence war etc., I wasn't commenting on that, it is not part of the discussion. It is an effort by you and others to change the subject and defend the million dollar babies.

65. I'm not defending them
I just don't think it is worth all this attention. It is a breast. If America hasn't seen one by now, they probably never will.

Should they be fined, yep. Should this be a subject for E! News, MTV, People and Us magazine, yep. Should we spend more than 5 minutes thinking about the 'wrongness of it?' Nope.

I raise the violence issue only because, we as a society accept violence more readily than a nipple.

To me, the real issue is the simulated sexual assault - that's something to be upset about. But a boob shot? Who cares?

67. I think we partly agree
Yes to not deserving of a lot of attention and time. Yes to fine them, and I would add, make the penalties stiff on the network.

I think a lot of people see it as more than just a nipple shot though. It's a continued lowering of the music industries behavior to make money by selling sex instead of producing a product that contributes to society in a meaningful way.

61. With all the REALLY bad crap I deal with on a daily basis...
... I found the JJ boob incident to be minorly annoying, at most. I agree with Dr. Dean: the FCC has bigger fish to fry.

62. I've never understood why our society is so uptight about breasts
Perhaps if what's his face started fondling it or sucking on it there'd be something to get upset about (that's rather purient), but a breast is a breast is a breast. As someone who has witnessed firsthand my child being born and afterward feeding from his mother's breast, I have to say the adolescent "tee-hee" factor over female anatomy is a bit passe.

What's wrong with being a Republican.

According to the dictionary Clark should be proud.

1- Of, relating to, or characteristic of a republic.
2 -Favoring a republic as the best form of government.

71. Right on RetroLounge!
Toby Keith's puss is way more offensive than JJ's boob! The poop that comes out of that numbskull's mouth makes me gag.
