Gore Reborn?
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 11:45 PM by American liberal
I just stumbled across this article in American Prospect, a rag I know nothing about. As a Gore supporter, though, I liked the tone of this article, especially this excerpt:

And it could be Gore, if he wants it. Here’s the scenario: Hillary Clinton continues rolling forward, amassing establishment support and locking down the large donors. Anti-Hillary voters prove unable to coalesce around a single champion, so Clinton is able to suck up all the oxygen but, as with most faits accomplis, attracts little genuine enthusiasm. At the same time, her hawkishness and ostentatious moderation sparks widespread disillusionment among the online activist community. Inevitably, the liberal wing of the party begins calling for a Bigfoot of its own to enter the primary, and the obvious prospect is Gore. DraftGore.com, which already exists, amplifies the drumbeat, collecting pledges and holding events. The press corps, sensing a Godzilla vs. King Kong battle, begins covering the events. As Marty Peretz, publisher of The New Republic and a longtime friend of Gore, says, “if he were to find that there was some groundswell for him, I think it would be hard to resist.”

1. Isn't the problem with Gore...
...that he's already a "loser"? If the Dems run him again, it will be tantamount to admitting they have noone better than the guy who lost (or barely won depending on your view of the 2000 election) to an obvious cretin and son-of-a-cretin GWB? I know Tricky Dicky won on his second attempt, but he's hardly a good example for the future.

It would be like running Mondale again. We should be grooming new blood that is untainted by defeat.

3. Nah. Read this article. It's absolutely persuasive. I was astounded,
and I was a BRADLEY delegate for god's sake.

No kidding. Read it and you'll see what I mean.

4. Gore didn't lose
and we all know it. We should run the most capable, experienced statesperson we have. That would be Al Gore. 2008 and the mess we're in demands experience, not "new!"

By the way, welcome to DU! :hi:

5. Uh, Nixon roared back 8 years after his defeat
so the precedent exists, even if the man himself isn't a great example of an exemplary president. Consider that when he was swept to power in 1968 by the "silent majority" of bigots who had felt threatedned by all the civil rights changes in the 60s, the mood out in televisionland was pretty much the same as it is now, deep discontent and the desire to dump what was seen as a radical agenda and go for the familiar.

I sincerely hope Clinton can be stopped at the primary level. She is the one candidate even Jebbie Bush could beat.

8. I know...
...that's why I said "Tricky Dicky won on his second attempt".

Still, all the comments are interesting. I will reappraise him in light of them.

Thanks everyone.

6. Nixon ran and lost against Kennedy in 1960...
and ran again in '68 and won.

10. You haven't listened to a Gore speech recently, have you?
In that case, you need to do that.

Al Gore is not the Al Gore of 2000.

2. I think Al has lots of support
After all, he IS our president. If * hadn't cheated, he'd have had two terms too.

I'm very very hopeful he is running. Hillary can eat my shorts!

11. Al could REALLY distinguish himself if he . . .
refused any and all corporate money . . . and ran on taking control of the government back from the corporatocracy . . .

as a card carrying member of the establishment, though, I don't know that Al has it in him to take such a drastic (though much needed) step . . .

12. I agree about Gore. That man is hot. And Kerry should be his running
mate. I call it the "poetic justice" ticket.

The two men who were cheated out of the higher office. The two men most people voted for--if all the votes had been counted.

Americans like justice. Add in "poetic," and they like it even more.

I have problems with Gore on NAFTA, and problems with Kerry on the war. But I voted for both of them, to stop Bush. This time, however, I would vote for them with enthusiasm, because I like justice, too. The American people chose them. I am completely convinced of that, in both cases. Whatever I think about different policies, I believe in democracy! And I would love to see democracy win!

I also think that this is the only team that has a chance of beating the machines. The machines can be beaten with a huge turnout, especially now that we have some experience with them, and now that consciousness of the non-transparency and of Bushite corporate control of the "trade secret" code is better known. A wrong result this time, with these candidates, would cause a revolution.

Gore has an amazing grasp of what's wrong. Kerry is a very intelligent guy, whom I'm sure would like to be part of an ethical government. Can you just imagine the team they would put together?

Gore/Kerry. It has that magical quality that things sometimes get. Gore/Kerry. Yes! Stick our ELECTED presidents right back in the Bushites' faces. And, by God, THIS time, we are NOT GOING TO ALLOW THEM TO STEAL IT. We will physically throw their goddamned election theft machines into Boston Harbor, if we have to. Gore/Kerry WILL be elected. They WILL be inaugurated. And they WILL run this country and put it back together again.

It has an inevitable feel to it, that no other single candidate or ticket has. Gore/Kerry. Of course!

:applause: :patriot: :patriot: :applause:

13. Well, well, well. Great, thought provoking article.
Sounds like Al's the man to watch -- again. We should all be so lucky if he succeeds.

As for a second run at the presidency -- it used to be quite common. I think this "one strike and you're out" mentality is a product of the same mindset that thinks that in order to win you have to crush your opponent like a bug and destroy his reputation for all time.
