My opinion of Oklahoma has improved over the last couple of years. They elected a fine new Democratic governor in 2002; they took good care of our Texas House Democrats when they broke quorum to stop Tom DeLay's mid-decade gerrymandering; and tomorrow they are going to give Wesley Clark his first victory.
On the football field is a different story, however.

3. Oklahoma is surprising |

Politics aside, I was blown away by Oklahoma when I was there last summer. I was in Oklahoma City and I'm not sure what I expected, but it was so different than I pictured it. Great skyline, tons of freeways, a great downtown entertainment district and lots of cool people. It's weird how we get these ideas in our head about how a place is "supposed" to be. Oklahoma City was just a really neat, clean city. I went to the bombing memorial while I was there. It gives you goose bumps. Very well done though.

5. I ordered a Martini in a Hotel bar in Oklahoma once....... |
|
I asked for " A dry Vodka Martini, shaken nice and cold, up, with a twist". As most of you should know, a "Twist" of lemon is just the rind, NOT any fruit. What i got was a Martini with a WEDGE of lemon in it. In my most polite voice i could muster i stopped the nice lady bartender from walking away after she put it down and said "Excuse me ma'am, but this isn't a "Twist". She, in a PERFECT lovely, melodic Oklahoma drawl said "You ain't from around here, are ya?" I said, no ma'am, i am just passing through but this is a WEDGE of le..... SHE CUT ME OFF......she said " Young man, i KNOW what a twist is, but if i put a piece of a peel in an okies drink they'd think i put garbage in it and I'd never hear the end of it!"
With the biggest grin i had seen in a week, she took my drink back, pulled out the lemon wedge, professionally and deftly yanked the fruit off the rind in one motion, twisted it into the cocktail and plunked it back in.
We became fast friends and i dare say i never had such a pleasant evening in a hotel bar before or since!

I am going to vote for The General tomorrow. It looks like he will win. However, the local news polls here have him and John Edwards very close, and Edwards just received the biggest endorsement in the State of Oklahoma. A politican's endorsement? No,bigger than that,Barry Switzer endorsed Edwards. The term "Big Dog" has more than one meaning here in Okieland.
God bless Wes!
