Likely will not happen, I concede, but I want Mario Cuomo & Bill Moyers |
|
to run for president.
I want one of them to win over the Repukes by a truly historic landslide percentage and I want the other one to be on the Supreme Court.
Just sayin'.

3. : ) -- 'appreciate the endorsement, OLL. Lova ya & amen right back. |

I'm a Cuomo Democrat after hearing the man speak often in NYC, and would work very hard for a candidacy if he ever decided to make the plunge.
But the dumbing down of America prohibits a Mario Cuomo from being present in the modern era.
And we're all the worse off for it.

ever come out of Dayton, Ohio (which is in Montgomery County, the lone blue county in SW Ohio that went for Kerry-Edwards in 04).
And Zinn? A gem. 'Heard him a few months ago at Cooper Union on the Iraq War and other topics. Tremendous.

7. His people's history of the United States is a big favorite for me. |
|
And his in-person speaking presence is clear and relaxed, but at the same time very persuasive.
He would smash George Bush in a debte.

5. I wanted Cuomo from waaaaaaaaaaay back when |
|
I would take him in a heartbeat.
Haffa heartbeat, even.
A nanosecond.
I would also kill to know what skeleton in his closet kept him from running when he was in his prime. I know I have many more skeletons than he does. I would forgive him most anything, myself.
His son may well be a good guy, but he simply isn't his father.

8. There was some talk that Mario Cuomo withdrew at the very last |
|
minute after a phone call with then-Governor Clinton.
Clinton was already well into the New Hampshire primary race and Cuomo was in Albany the night before the filing deadline for New Hampshire.
He had made the decision to jump in and had scheduled a press conference to announce his candidacy in New Hampshire the following morning. The plane was fueling on the tarmac.
After that phone call with Clinton, Cuomo called the pilot in and told him there would be no trip to New Hampshire.
That's all I know. Some time later on, Andrew Cuomo joined the Clinton Cabinet. Might Mario have agreed not to fight Bill Clinton for the nomination if his son could have a place in the Clinton Cabinet?
It might have been a father's sacrifice for a son's future and not a skeleton. I have no idea. But I will tell you this. I miss Mario Cuomo's voice from our national debate. He's needed now more than ever and I hope our next presidential team has enough sense to seek his counsel.

9. I have a very fuzzy memory of him and a run against Dukakis |
|
something about his not running because the messenger wasn't as important as the message. I remember being bitterly disappointed and even composing a letter to him (never sent) that the message couldn't get through if the messenger was inferior to the meessage. Or something

Even aside from politics, Cuomo is in command of many fields of study.
And he is an expert on Baseball -- its traditions, its rules, its cultural context, etc.
There was active talk of making him the Commissioner of Baseball a few years back.
