December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945 ......... |
|
The dates of WWII, start and finish.
How long has George kept us in Iraq? Bogged down. Going nowhere.
Progress, George?
What progress?

1. Think about that. How many troops, how much support, |
|
that was righteous. This isn't. No progress, we're going backward. He's a fuckface (to quote an old friend).

I think he was pointing out the length of time *we* fought in WWII, as opposed to the time we've been spinning our wheels in the sands of Iraq to no purpose...

6. Americans were fighting fascists in Europe beginning in 1937 |

The (so-called) Abraham Lincoln Brigade (officially the International Brigade), including Canada's Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, fought against Franco's fascists in Spain between 1937 and 1938.

17. thank you for reminding us of the freedom fighters in 30s Europe |
|
not forgetting all the Americans that fought for the British and French. There was a N.American squadron in the RAF before Dec. 1941.

That's quite jolting, now that you point it out. What a cruel, destructive, bungling waste this administration has led us into. We'll be there for years, and they'll be worse off than before. And there'll be no real punishment for the culprits.

8. 3 years and 8 months from Pearl Harbor to VJ Day |
|
It's been 4 years and 7 months since 9/11.
That should say something about Bush and his "war."

But one thing to remember is this: ZERO post-conflict US casualties in post-war Germany. Zero. Same with Japan.
It's over 2,000 in Iraq, given that the mission was "accomplished" after three weeks.
Also 400,000 US soldiers were killed in the four years they fought in WWII.
But I agree with what one poster said earlier: there really is no comparison.

do you really think that? If that's the case then Iraq can be compared to anything, right? The question is whether or not there are enough similarities to make it an accurate comparison - or one worth considering. I think they are two incredibly different events. When we talk about 'comparing Iraq to X' we mean it as a way of showing similarities, like when people talk about Iraq being like Vietnam because there is no end in sight and there are doubts about the way the country was led into the situation in the first place (Tonkin Gulf vs. WMD claims).
We don't think of these 'comparisons' in the terms of "everything that's different about them." Your model would apply to every war in history as just a basic 'comparison', but that's not what the original discussion meant.

15. Yanno ..... you missed the whole point ......... |
|
Overanalyzing the post is what you did.
The long and short of the post was 'time'.
All of WWII took less time than we've been fucking around in Iraq.
That's it. Anything else is navel gazing overanalyzation.

16. Sorry, I thought that's what you were talking about - |
|
We did talk about time, and I just mentioned casualties as well.
Then you added: ".... and justification ...... and support ...... and purpose ..... and righteous (or lack thereof) ..... but yeah .... no comparison."
I thought you were expanding it, and I didn't see a comparison on the notions you were raising, that's all.
