Dean: We have rebuilt the DNC...now primarily a grassroots organization.
He says the DNC brought in 18 million the first quarter this year, a record in an off year.

The audio is a very large file in Quicktime, but I am listening now it is well worth the listen. It is a Q&A session at the Prospect breakfast this week.

http://www.prospect.org/weblog/2006/04/post_142.html

DINING WITH DEAN. From Tuesday’s American Prospect breakfast with Howard Dean:

Walter Shapiro: Governor, from where you sit, is the fact that there will be two caucuses between the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary a done deal, or is this still open for negotiation, as to whether there will be caucuses and/or whether New Hampshire will have its traditional unmolested Iowa/New Hampshire role in American history?

Howard Dean: We don’t molest anybody. We leave that to the deputy press secretary of the Homeland Security agency."

For this and more, listen to this recording of the event.

--The Editors

Very off the cuff answers, the one is he covering now is his meeting with Clinton. Going to discuss the databases.

1. And I can't resist a comment about the "f....king hippies" via TNR
Sounds like the fuckin hippies referred to by the New Republic article are doing a pretty good job at organizing. They may even know what they are doing.

"Last year, a major Democratic donor from the 2004 presidential campaign received a call from some operatives at Howard Dean's Democratic National Committee (DNC). Dean was coming to town in a few days, they told him, and they wanted to schedule a meeting. Political fund-raisers normally make such calls a month in advance, and so the seat-of-the-pants approach didn't go over well. "You can't call me the week before and say, 'Hey ... we'll be there Monday, want to hang out?'" says the donor. "They had all these fucking hippies.... These are people that are great to raise a few $500 checks, plan a party at a nightclub. But they're not the folks you need to give you to do the things you want to do."

7. I sure was there from day one.
Still on board...someone yesterday said I was too supportive. Not really, it is just that I trust DFA and I trust Howard Dean to bring the people into the party.

It is trust.

4. Great interview....pulling no punches.
Question about what they are doing to get Lieberman to abide by CT party rules...Answer...we do NOT get involved.

Dean made it clear the party should NOT push anyone out of races. Very clear.

6. I really love Dr. Dean...
...he's doing a good job (as vs. "a heckova job") leading the party in the right directions and building a bedrock foundation for success and stability.

8. About torture...
Speaking for himself...we should not be violating the Geneva convention.

Says the party as far as he knows does not have an official position. He personally believes we have lost our moral authority.

Never Forget: George W. Bush willfully violated National Security to cover-up his willful launch of a war of aggression and illegal occupation of Iraq.

10. About censure and impeachment...
I swear these reporters or bloggers are not very good at catching nuance.

Dean said the right wing is using these as a weapon. He said of course there will be investigations. He repeated it over and over, of course we will investigate to see if there is a reason to impeach.

He speaks of his respect for Feingold, and both options are to be kept on the table for when they take back power.

He sounded as though the leadership of the Democrats did not think Bush would actually go to war with Iran, if I heard that correctly. He said if they really thought that they would be speaking up.

It looks like so-called "hippies" can find more than one way to fly with grass.

13. Some remarks on local organizing, small donors, having community.
About winning locally:

"We beat them 4 special elections in a row in MS. We won the mayorship of Mobile, AL, we won the mayorship of Tulsa, OK. We've won races in Utah and Missouri, all grassroots stuff. Not high-profile races, sometimes we put a little money into the state parties to help them, but usually just grassroots organizing. My philosophy is you can't win the presidential if you can't win the city council, the mayoral, and the school board. It 's a 4 year effort and its a continuous campaign."

About small donors:

"One thing we're changing fairly dramatically is fundraising. We are still doing a lot with big donors. We did a great event Monday night with President Clinton and Al Gore. The official number was 1.3 million, but it will be higher than that.

And...that's great. But..what we're really pushing for is something called Democracy Bonds.
(He explains more about them and the steady source of operating funds they provide.) Emphasizes again they are small donors.

He says they need to respect the donors and their wishes.
"Online community is really a community, just doesn't happen to be in the same place geographically."

14. If an appeal is signed by Dr Dean, I'll donate; otherwise the nat'l party
can still take a flying leap, as far as I'm concerned. Howard Dean has it SO RIGHT about the importance of the grass roots, both online and off. As long as the national Democratic powers-that-be keep trying to get in bed with the corporate donors and K Street lobbyists, and keep ignoring the people who cast votes, the Dems will not be able to take back the House and Senate. The adage that "all politics is local" is very literal.

17. I bought my Democracy Bond
its a great idea, the kind that's bringing the Dem party out of the corporate board room and back to the grassroots.

Its beyond me how any Dem can criticize him for his tremendous success.

Now, lets get to work on health care.

The first part is fine, but near the end it gets muffled.
