Poll question: RAW STORY used one of my questions for congress, but did they choose best?
Here's the questions I submitted. If you could only ask ONE which would you want congressmen to have to answer?

To see which they actually used, go to and search for Mike Dixon.

  • When the interests of average Americans and those of big business conflict, many Democrats tend to side with the GOP and business, for example in the recent bankruptcy bill or trade agreements that undermine labor laws and environmental laws. What is your principle to determine which side to choose on those issues, and could you give an example of major legislation when you chose people over business interests?

  • Why do so many Democrats support neoliberalism, the IMF, and World Bank, institutions that consistently and intentionally bankrupt Third World countries, then force privatization and cuts in social spending? If we were even remotely serious about reducing animosity to the US and terrorism, it would seem that we should put an end to those practices.

  • Why don't Democrats discuss the real reasons we invaded Iraq? Even when Cindy Sheehan asked them, most refused to answer apart from the BS terms of terrorism, WMDs, and spreading democracy, the demonstrably false reasons the Bushies gave (please don't mention any of those in your reply, it is demeaning to those reading this and will make you look dishonest). Why are you all so afraid to say directly what the Iraqis and the rest of the world know, that we went to seize the oil, that we took the concessions from Russian and French companies and gave them to American ones? Isn't that a prima facie war crime? Do we have a real democracy if we can have a major war and none of the discussion of the real reasons are going on in public?

  • Would the anti-corruption reforms Democrats have in mind prevent another Dick Cheney-Halliburton type relationship? Isn't the problem deeper than just lobbyist and extend to elected officials, bureaucrats, and those at the Pentagon who leave government work and use their contacts as CEOs, working on Wall Street, or for banks?

  • Why have so many Democrats voted with the Republicans for things like the Patriot Act, Bankruptcy Bill, and nominees to courts and cabinet offices who could be proven war criminals with information already in the public record like Bybee, Rice, and Gonzales, or not vigorously oppose through filibuster a Supreme Court nominee who doesn't even support our system of checks and balances?

  • What will you do to break up the consolidation of the media that has lead to former news organizations serving as de facto propaganda outlets for the White House?

This is the thing I want to ask my Congressman and both my Senators - all Democrats. I think they'd all be much better than Bush on most issues, but they need to be a lot better on this one. You can't be on the side of both the corporations and the average citizen. Not anymore. That's a real problem for people in government, even people with good intentions. But it's the truth and they've got to choose.
