NanceRants - and she is one PISSED-OFF citizen!
NanceRants – and she is one pissed-off Citizen!

By Nancy Greggs

Like many of us, I am in a perpetual state of anger these days. Between the mess in Iraq, the saber-rattling with Iran, the lobbyist scandals, the deficit, the outsourcing of jobs, the price of gas, and a buffoon of a president who thinks breaking the law is job one, it’s hard not to be pissed-off on a minute-to-minute basis.

Hey, there’s probably stuff going on that would really set me off, if I even knew about it. But these days, with new revelations about the criminality of this Administration coming at us on a daily basis, it’s hard to keep up without a Goddamned scorecard.

But then there’s always that one little thing that gets on your last nerve, and this week my personal rocket’s red glare was set off by a remark made by Antonin Scalia when he was asked about the Bush v Gore decision, the stolen 2000 election. His response: “Get over it!”

I have heard that phrase once too often, and it sticks in my craw like the “Love it or leave it” bullsh*t I heard in the ‘sixties, a virtual dismissive wave of the hand that says I have no voice, no power, no say. Well, you’ve picked on the wrong citizen if you think I will shut my mouth, or be relegated to talking to that arrogant hand.

I am an American. That may not mean much to people like Scalia, but it means something to me. And when someone tampers with my country’s voting process, or anything else that impinges on the democracy of MY COUNTRY, I am not going to GET OVER IT, now or ever.

I am an American. I will not be dismissed, minimalized or marginalized, especially by hypocrites like Scalia et al, who persist in throwing rocks at my patriotism from inside their glass houses.

I will not be preached to by warmongering pseudo-Christians; I will not be reminded of the importance of family values by people who have no values at all. I will not be lied to, stolen from, manipulated. I will not be assuaged by meaningless rhetoric; I will not be lectured on the topic of honesty by people who wouldn’t recognize the truth if it walked up to them on the street and bit them in the ass.

I will not be condescended to by people who are as immoral as they are greedy and self-serving. I will not be shooed away from the adult dinner table like an ignorant child, while the alleged grown-ups plot the destruction of my own nation, or the nations of others. I will not be told to remain silent in the face of wrongdoing. I will not relinquish a single freedom that is my birthright as an American.

And no, I WILL NOT GET OVER IT.

When my fellow citizens are suffering, I will speak out for them, and stand with them. When disaster strikes, I will not GET OVER IT by going shopping, or attending a birthday party, or catching a ballgame. REAL AMERICANS don’t do things like that – and besides, it seems pretty obvious that those jobs are already taken.

REAL AMERICANS do not need to be told how to act, or how to react. We know what needs to be done, and we do it every time. Within minutes of the 9/11 attack, firefighters, police officers, and emergency workers were on the scene. They risked their lives to save others without hesitation. Not one of them walked away in an attempt to GET OVER IT. And dare I say it? Not one of them found it necessary to stop and read The Pet Goat in its entirety before springing into action.

REAL AMERICANS don’t condone torture, secret prisons, or rendition. REAL AMERICANS don’t look at photographs from Abu Ghraib and GET OVER IT. REAL AMERICANS don’t watch footage of dead Iraqi children on the nightly news and GET OVER IT. REAL AMERICANS don’t read about their soldiers being wounded and killed in an ill-disguised attempt to put MONEY into the pockets of the rich and the powerful and GET OVER IT.

This Administration, and the elected officials who support it, have brazenly picked a fight with myself and my fellow citizens. Wrong move, wrong crowd. They obviously don’t know who they’re up against. You see, real Americans don’t GET OVER IT when it’s their own country under siege. They don’t kneel, they don’t bow, they don’t yield.

The American people are now standing knee-deep in a foul-smelling liquid. They know what it looks like, what it smells like; they KNOW what it is. So stop telling us it’s raining. Stop trotting yourselves out into the public square with your half-truths and your spin. We all know the emperor has no clothes; don’t insult our intelligence with grandiose descriptions of his wardrobe.

I know this Administration and its party just LOVE throwing those bumper-sticker slogans around. Well, here’s one for them to chew on: “Eventually, everything comes out in the wash.” And I’ll be damned if I’m going to watch all of that dirty Republican laundry get hung on the line, and be told to GET OVER IT.

There will be a backlash to the corruption and incompetence of this regime, of that I have no doubt. Poll numbers for the current crop of Republicans are plummeting faster than the average American’s savings account. I guess all of those angry citizens who have been keeping tabs on where their country is being led just aren’t GETTING OVER IT either.

So to the people in power who have turned my country into something to be scorned rather than admired, to be feared rather than respected, to be a harbinger of hate, violence and death the world over, I say this: You are going down. Your support is dwindling, your lies are being exposed, and your failures are as glaringly visible as a fireworks display on the 4th of July.

And if you find that upsetting, well, hey … GET OVER IT!

That Beagle has ripped up my curtains, scratched my antiques, chewed up my clothes, and pushed me out of my own bed on a cold night. (I also suspect she taped-over CSI Miami more than once, because I certainly don't remember taping the Westminster Dog Show finals.)

But all of THAT being said, she still displays more decorum than that lard-ass who passes himself off as a Supreme Court Justice.

CHLOE for SCOTUS - sure, she can be bought-off with a Beggin' Strip - but so can most Republicans these days.

This is Democratic Underground here! Your questions seems a bit odd!

Nance... you certainly can speak for me anytime, I support everything you have said! I talk this stuff ALL the time! These CORRUPT Idiots in the WH are sinking us into such MUCK that it's going to take far too many years to recover from. And that's if we STARTED right this minute!!

sorry, POS.

:grr:

and hopefully, he is just the start, the others remaining that participated in the wholesale whoring of the supreme court, need to also be impeached and charged.

and those that have left, since we can't impeach them, should also be charged with treason.

You can take the girl out of Brooklyn, but you'll NEVER shut that big mouth up.

Whether you were born an American, or were sworn-in as a citizen this morning, there is a bond between all of us. This Administration has done everything they can to drive a wedge between us, to pit one citizen against another.

Well, here's the Late Breaking News: When push comes to shove, we ALL know how to throw that tea into the harbour - so, dear NeoCons, don't let that backsplash hit you in the ass on the way OUT!

20. Beautiful rant!! You nailed it! It should be on the front page of the NYT!
You said beautifully what so many people want to say ~

When I started out on Internet Boards, (and politics) four years ago, I didn't know much about what happened in 2000. But when I asked if anyone thought the election had been stolen, one rightwinger told me to 'get over it'! He said no one was interested anymore, and I should 'quit whining and move on'. He was so sorry he said that. I really wasn't sure about what had happened, but his dismissive comments prompted me to show him that people WERE interested. So I started a discussion that went on for months on that board ~ and I learned a lot. People from both sides got involved and went deeply into the legalities of what happened.

I know it was just a little internet forum, but every day I smiled when I saw people there discussing what he said 'no one is interested' in anymore. If he had just said 'no, I don't think so' ~ I would have moved on since I really didn't know much at the time. Now, I know, thanks to him.

Maybe Scalia needs one of those 500,000 signature letters explaining to him what we know now about what he did back then and that it will go down in history ~ and that it wasn't just his own little private club doing a small favor for one of their cronies.

Clearly he doesn't get the significance of what he did. They operate in a bubble and laws mean nothing to him. I'd like to see him get inundated with letters asking him to step down. He is a disgrace and hasn't had the self control to be quiet, or to recuse himself from cases which clearly required that he do so, further proving that he is a man of no morals.

Nance, I love what you said, maybe we could all sign it and send it to Scalia.

I have been told I have a way with words, a knack for expressing the opinions of my fellow Americans. If that is so, I am honoured.

The words may be mine -- but the PASSION behind those words is to the credit of all Americans. I only hope I do them justice.

We are in this fight together. Whosoever puts that fight into words is just one small aspect of the courage of those who wage the battle every day.

31. Where did the rule come in that there's only a split second...
... for terrible GOP behavior to matter? After which, it's considered poor form to bring it up again.

My favorite demonstration of this mentality is from an Ari Fleischer press conference:

Q Well, after the IAEA brought up the forged documents. But on February -- if it wasn't substantiable enough to be presented in Mr. Powell's presentation, surely by then the White House realized that it wasn't substantiable enough to be put in the State of the Union. Why no public comment after February 5th? Why wait a month until the IAEA challenged the forged documents?

MR. FLEISCHER: Because this is the nature of intelligence information. This intelligence information was included in the NIE; it was part of the information that was being discussed widely in intelligence circles. There was a consensus agreement that supported the NIE with the footnoted objection from the State Department.

Q Does the President consider the matter closed now? With the President -- with Director Tenet's letter, does the President consider the matter closed?

MR. FLEISCHER: Yes, the President has moved on. And I think, frankly, much of the country has moved on, as well.

So... the President of the United States started a war costing tens of thousands of lives, about $1 trillion, and an unfathomable amount of additional chaos in the Middle East BASED ON FORGED DOCUMENTS, and all he has to do is have a lackey say "he's moved on." And the press and public accepted it!?

I'm beginning to think Darwin was wrong about us apes.

Thank you so much, Nance, for speaking for me!! I thought I was the ONLY ONE in this country as pissed off as you seem to be!!
It's like the rest of the country is in a daze, or something...too comfortable, or too afraid to rock the boat...maybe fearful of losing what little they have to lose...leaving people like me, who HAVE nothing left to lose...to be on the front lines, screaming like hell.

I have absolutely fucking HAD IT with these Bushies! I've been unemployed for nearly a year now! Every night, I go to bed, screaming...when will this nightmare end!!

And then you come along, and give voice to what I'm feeling, and it is truly a breath of fresh air!

42. You ROCK! Nance!!!!
I agree with you 100%! I just dont understand how some people can still have their heads buried in the sand over this misadministration's illegal activities. It is high time that the American Public starts making some noise about this situation and start trying to take control of our own destiny. I fear for the future of my children because of the way things are going.

This needs to be shared with everyone! I'll be sure to pass it along and give credit to you and DU

57. We Must Do More Than Rant: Impeach bushcheney is only Step 1
We simply don't have the right to "Get Over" Stolen Elections (1 or 2).

We can redeem this nation only by coming to terms with the full reality. The reality that 2 elections were stolen, that the election thieves defrauded and terrorized the American People into complicity with a criminal war of aggression, that the regime never had legitimate claim to the power they've been wielding, and thus have no place of honor in our history.

Simply admitting the truth to ourselves is not enough. We need to purge the immoral manipulators from our midst, hand them over for international trial and punishment, expunge them from our history, and reverse all illegitimate actions we can.

Yes, first is to take back our country. Return the power to the sovereign people. But that power must then be wielded, morally but mercilessly.

That includes matters both trivial/easy and grave/unsettling. Things like making up a new words for things like "non-president" and "ex-non-president," as well as engaging in the unpleasant tasks of removing by impeachment (or resignation demand) all perpetrators (Scalia, Baker, Harris, Blackwell, etc...), and all appointees still serving in any capacity -- yes any. And then reversing all legislation, including reimbursing the taxpayers for every unlawful taxcut and contract profit.

Sure, a "Truth and Reconciliation" process might be best. But that requires buy-in from the perpetrators -- not likely. They've set the terms. We need to simply fight fire with fire -- specifically, scorched earth. Nothing "legal" or (strictly speaking) "unconstitutional" need be our concern.

You'll often hear the rationalization "Elections have consequences." Well, so do Stolen Elections. We need to make them a reality.

And before someone objects, it had better be on a moral basis. If these actions are "too much trouble" or "too expensive" or not worth pursuing because "it'll never happen," then the country's not worth taking back. Unless and until we do these things we will continue as a rogue state, a lie-based non-democracy, and a declining grim shadow of the noble experiment we once were.

We have no other moral or patriotic option.

And I just did a few minutes ago, to a RW bitch on another forum who claims she's just SOOO tired of hearing that "Bush lied." Even at this late date, she's trying to claim everyone including Madeleine Albright and Hillary Clinton said Saddam had WMDs. So I responded, "Yeah, but WHEN did they say it? 1998? Did they claim it was based on the latest intelligence?" After a paragraph or so in that vein I said, "Bush lied--GET OVER IT!"

With all the pressing concerns identified here, it does not take a genius to figure out that George Bush on vacation is a perfect example of what is wrong with the people at the helm of this country.

If only someone would read this to George (since George does not read books, magazines and newspapers) maybe he would get a clue as to why he is not loved and revered --and his poll numbers would not be in the tank.

Michael Moore had it wrong. Also, it's often described as a book, when it's a lesson in a workbook called "Reading Mastery II: Storybook 1."

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Pet_Goat

The above link not only clarifies the name, it has details of some little-known Bush lies surrounding the circumstances of that fateful day.

67. Newbie here!
Had to get on and post after reading this as you have captured my sentiments exactly. Had my own "moment" this week that I would like to share. I wrote a LTTE of our paper questioning how they could defend *'s position in the leak investigation by suggesting that Libby is an unreliable witness due to his indictment but fail to ever mention that * repeatedly said he didn't know who the leaker was only to say he had declassified the info in the leaks. The paper printed the letter but placed it immediately after a long LTTE that said anyone who was against the war is engaging in intellectual dishonesty because "Saddam had it in for us."The letter goes on to say protesters need to stop their whining and if you don't like* then just "suffer for the next two years and nine months." Nice balance the paper provides by arming the wing nuts with some jingoism before they had to read my LTTE. Telling people to shut up and suffer is the most un-american thing I could ever think of but it somehow passes off as intellectual honesty for those you think of themselves as the most patriotic.

"I will not be preached to by warmongering pseudo-Christians"

Says it brilliantly. If these hatemongers who often call themselves "Christians"-- the ones who excitedly talk about nuking Iran or slaughtering villages full of Palestinians-- had any idea how far away they were from Jesus' teachings of pacifism and love for one's neighbor, their heads would explode from the contradictions. These jingoistic fools give the entire Christian faith a bad name. Maybe they should finally read what Jesus was actually saying, and the respect and tolerance He had for all peoples.

75. Read an interesting interview of Bruce Willis by journalist,
Audrey Jones, in a supplement of the Mail On Sunday, today.

After a description in the table of contents, "Bruce almighty - In a rare and candid interview, Hollywood legend Bruce Willis, once a loyal supporter of George W Bush, lets rip at the president", the article begins:

"Bruce Willis is, in his own words, "P****d off'. 'I don't like the way the world is being run.' So has he fallen out with his former best buddy, the man in the perfect position to make the world a better place, President George W Bush?"

'I'm apolitical', he says.'Write that down (familiar phrase?). I'm not a Republican.' (snip)

'The world's out of control. We can't influence politicians, we can't get lobbyists out of Washington, we can't connect with senatorsand congressmen, who don't give a s*** about us.'

Think he might be feeling the heat? He seems a good family man, despite his divorce and inclination to remain single, but he's as confused as ever about the war in Iraq.

In order to disrupt what looks like yet another election that can be controlled by DREs of Diebold, ES&S, Sequoia and whoever else is out there plotting and planning with Blackwell and others (apparently our own California Secretary of State (appointed by Schwarzenneger)is part of our problem...since he just approved Deibold equipment to be used state-wide)...why don't we all get absentee ballots and refuse to use the electronic equipment. Bring the marked ballot in to the precinct and tell the workers (loudly enough for the assembled voters to hear) that you are voting this absentee ballot because you do not trust the electronic equipment being used. Maybe we can just make the idea of voting by machine irrelevant, non-functioning, or whatever the hell it takes to get back to a hard-copy, paper ballot, marked by human beings and....we hope...counted by human beings. We need to work on that to get our country back....and we should never GET OVER IT !!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ELOQUENCE AND PASSION...we all need more of that.

87. Scalia has to say that
because the one thing that is not mutable, the one thing that is threatened by the reassertion of immutable truth and change is his own gangster record, his scandalous record, his immoral and Un-American pronouncements and incredibly unfit personality.

Those will never change even if he were to undergo some laudable conversion, confession, repentance and restitution. What he is asking of others is something he simply cannot do under the best of spiritual scenarios.

God may forgive him but history cannot. And he will never get over that, believe me. His place among the judges throughout history damned by infamy, such as the Reich judges condemned at Nuremberg, is assured.

He teaches all of us what the law and what being an American means by reverse words and example.

He should be impeached and investigated, or vice versa.

99. K & R Fine Rant
Nance,

You wrote what a lot of us have been thinking for quite a while now!

When Nixon was in office my then 70 yr old mother was watching the news and jumped up and yelled at her t.v. - "just because they wrote special music to use when you enter the room it doesn't make you a king!" Thereafter she referred to Nixon as King Richard. She was very aware of what was going on politically.

When * said Iraq was a threat to the U.S. I jumped up and yelled at my t.v. - "You're lying!" The other women in the room suggested he was "just incompetent" and I disagreed and told them why.

Nance, you have stated the things as they are! You are right!

Remember women are the majority of the population in the U.S. and women are powerfull and smart. We can learn a great deal from observant women in our midst.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

101. Well done Nancy!
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 04:42 PM by fredkc
I just found this on Monday, someone emailed the link over the weekend.

After 22 years, I quit the Republican party in Oct. 2001. The Patriot Act (God, how I hate that name!) was illegal on it's face. Congress had no authority to even pass it. Until it is repealed, in my opinion, we are ruled by an illegal government, since the only thing that makes it legal is its continued adherence o the Constitution.

"REAL AMERICANS don’t condone torture, secret prisons..."
I think it is vital that this administration NOT be allowed to finish it's full term. This has implications as vital as the survival of the Constitution, in my opinion.

in 2000 the people couldn't have known. In 2004 most did not know, and so twice we have escaped the judgement, and trap of world opinion, through our own ignorance. But now we know. If we the people allow this administration to finish this term, it means it has our implied approval for such things.

See heres the nasty little secret. Even when we question the validity of our election process, our leaders fidelity to the principles that are trotted out each election year, others don't. Deluded or no, they genuinely believe that when Washington speaks, it is "We The People" who speak!

Allow this admin. to finish the term, and we will lose much forever!
* The safety of our troops in any future war, thru abbrogation of the Geneva accords.
* Any moral authority to meet the challenge of abuses set upon their own citizens by the likes of China, Sudan, Niger, etc etc. Because for the next generation at least, whenever we bring it up, we'll hear, "You do it too!!".

How can we face our grandchildren, who will:
* Assume at least an additional $2.6 Trillion in new debt, with no taxes to cover it.
* The competition for oil that China represents. Within 5-7 years they will be looking to buy nearly twice the oil the US buys now, and they'll be offering cash not debt for it. while facing
* A $10-12 trillion national debt load.
* And a bankrupt moral postition on the one thing that has set us apart in the past, our position on human rights.

For speaking out like this, I have been called "liberal" (yes, I know where I am, but it still bothers me, and in fact they moved, I didn't) "Liar, and Traitor" by the neo-cons who hijacked my former party, while they've forsaken their oath of office, and kicked the Constitution to the curb.

I will not get over that, either!

I think you have a great message here. It would be interesting to hear from the other former Republicans (and there are many) here at DU - we're always interested in knowing what particular straw broke the camel's back in choosing to leave your party.

I wouldn't take offence at being called a Liberal - around here, it's a compliment!

If you go into My Journal and scroll down, you will find a piece I wrote a few months ago, "The Divided States of America". I'd be interested in hearing your views on that - I think it speaks to some of the things you have addressed in your post. You can send me a PM (personal message) at my Inbox here.

Thanks again for a really thought-provoking reply.

And again, Welcome to DU :hi:

104. From another former Republican
I'm a 48 year old conservative Christian born and raised in the Deep South Bible Belt of America, who voted for the "conservative" party faithfully for 28 of those years (my first vote was in 1976, for the incumbent, Gerald R. Ford at the age of nineteen, in East Tennessee). Until a few years ago, I never stopped to think about what I was doing, blindly following and naively trusting "leaders" who care nothing for my values or my faith ... but who pretend to for opportunity's sake.

I have changed, dramatically, and the biggest fear I have now is our nation is now characterized by the same attitudes of subservient deferrence to authority that I once had, and motivated by fear, hatred, and prejudice.

That isn't how I want to be ... and for 230 years, it wasn't what America wanted to be.

I voted for Bush ... once. I apologize to you all for that mistake.

110. Welcome to DU, Charles!

I was really touched by your reply.

There is no need to apologize to anyone here for having voted for Bush in 2000. Many good people believed they were voting for a good, honest, Christian man. They did not foresee what his agenda truly was - unfortunately for the country, we now all know what this man stands for, and it has NOTHING to do with democracy, or the traditional ideals of this country or his party.

As I have often said here on DU, George Bush DOES NOT represent the Republican party as it has always been, nor does he represent conservative values.

He and his Administration are, shall we say, a horse of another colour. And I hope that horse gets its ass kicked out of office before it's too late.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with all of us. You have described yourself as a Christian man - please pray for our nation. We need it.

103. Nancy, not only do I LOVE your rant here, but I also like your sig line.
The one about putting one's hand on the Bible and swearing to uphold the Constitution - and NOT the other way around!

Just an EXCELLENT rant!

111. SPECTACULAR RANT!
This post easily and immediately convinced me to join DU -- bravo for a spectacular job! If this post doesn't wake up more "we the people" to the dismal reality of today's American "civil servants", then we are doomed for sure. After reading your words and sharing your intense fervor, and watching you catapult to the top of my (very limited) hero list, I copied it and sent it on to my entire email list -- citing both you and DU, of course! Thanks for a fabulous read -- and, given the responses to it, my renewed hope for a return to life as American citizens that honor our Constitution, our laws, our integrity, and ourselves! chgosooz
