popular boycotts
In 1997, we asked EC readers if they were boycotting any companies, products or shops for ethical reasons. There were over 60 different targets, from Nestlé, the most popular, through to someone boycotting visiting Burma. Unusual boycotts included avoiding mobile phones, The National Lottery and coloured toilet paper. Overall 93% of readers who replied said that they were boycotting something and 80% went on to tell us what.

Top 10 Boycotts

1 Nestlé 78%
2 McDonalds 34%
3 Shell 26%
4 Supermarkets 9%
5 Procter and Gamble 9%
6 Meat 9%
7 Animal testing 9%
8 Boots 9%
9 BP 7%
10 Multinationals 5%

3. Glad you asked!
The Nestlé boycott is a boycott launched on July 4, 1977 in the United States against the Swiss based Nestlé corporation. It soon spread rapidly outside the United States, particularly in Europe. It was prompted by concern about the company's marketing of breast milk substitutes (infant formula), particularly in Third World countries, which campaigners claim contributes to the unnecessary death and suffering of babies largely among the poor

5. Give new moms formula for babies, they dry up, have to cont formula
formula switches to dried rather than the premixed they started on, so now they mix with unsafe water, leading to diarrhea and death of babies.

2. Boycotting Burma/Myanamar is a good thing
It'd have been nice if the pukes would honor the trade restrictions on that country.

4. I boycott General Motors because of their
"Strategic Law Suits Against Public Participation" in environmental matters - and their frivolous, vexatious lawsuits against developers of environmental technology (electric cars, hybrid cars, etc.).

Haven't had a GM car since 1987.
