Karl Rove's appearance before a grand jury in the CIA leak case Wednesday comes on the heels of a "target letter" sent to his attorney recently by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, signaling that the Deputy White House Chief of Staff may face imminent indictment, sources that are knowledgeable about the probe said Wednesday.

It's unclear when Fitzgerald sent the target letter to Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin. Sources close to the two-year-old leak investigation said when Rove's attorney received the letter Rove volunteered to appear before the grand jury for an unprecedented fifth time to explain why he did not previously disclose conversations he had with the media about covert CIA operative Valerie Plame and her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who criticized the Bush administration's use of pre-war Iraq intelligence.

A federal grand jury target letter is sent to a person in a criminal investigation who is likely to be indicted. A "target" of a grand jury investigation is a person who a prosecutor has substantial evidence to link to a crime.

Last week, Rove was stripped of some of his policy duties in a White House shakeup orchestrated by incoming Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten. The White House insisted that Rove was not demoted, but insiders said the executive branch is bracing for a possible indictment against Rove.

1. Fitzgerald probably feels he now has enough evidence to take on Rove
A target letter was simply a signal to Rove that Fitzgerald's gonna come knockin' on his door like the reaper come for his soul.

4. For a minute I thought he was shoplifting at Target with Claude Allen
As we all know, in The Bush Administration, you can bomb the wrong country or drown a city and still be doing a heckuva job...

But get caught shoplifting at Target...

Former Bush Aide Charged in Felony Theft
Claude Allen had recently resigned as White House domestic-policy adviser.

5. As pointed out elsewhere, only one of two things is possible
I read this here on DU, but don't recall where .......

Rove is going to the GJ for only one of two reasons .... he asked to go or he was invited.

If he was invited, that's a good signal that Fitz does not have enough to indict. If he **did** have enough to invite, there'd be no need for Karl to be there.

If, on the other hand, Karl invited himself, then it is the legal equivalent of a Hail Mary pass.

Discouting for a moment Raw Story's reporting, we have no way to know which is true.

But then I have to wonder ... given that they just moved Karl's deck chair on the Titantic Ship of State ..... given that Luskin had previously said Rove would njot be indicted, but in a more recent interview declined to comment on the same question ..... and given Fitz's pattern ...... I'd hazard a guess that he's going to be indicted .... if not on outright purjury, then on some lesser charge relating to his intent to decieve.

6. Follow-up: Schuster reporting as if it was the Hail Mary option
on KO, David Schuster is reporting that Rave went to the GJ today in some kind of last ditch effoert to stay out of jail.

It is, of course, all speculation, but the spekyalatin's lookin' good.
