Just for fun. Here's a site to help you choose whom to vote for in 08.
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 03:48 PM by Old Crusoe
The site is fun. Here it is:

http://www.selectsmart.com/plus/select.php

In the upper-righthand corner is an icon that says "Presidential Candidate Selection: 2008 Front Runners."

Click that, and a survey appears. You indicate where you stand on an issue, and how great a priority it is to you compared with other issues.

At the end, the software tells you where you fall on the ideological scale, and lists candidates by the degree of compatibility with your selections.

It's interesting also to see how INcompatible you are with GOP candidates. Your last 5 tell you as much in some ways as your first 5.

I've taken the survey 4 times now and in various order, the results are the same: Kucinich, Kerry, Edwards, Gore, Feingold, Clark etc., and the last 3 are all Republicans: Tancredo, Allen & Brownback.

Six candidates at 91% or higher. In looking at the other lists so far, everyone else has three or less candidates above 90%.

I knew I agreed with Biden on tons of issues. But he's not a serious threat for the nomination.

Mostly, I was relieved Warner finished so high at 94% since I've championed him for about a year.

34. I'm increasingly worried about Mitt Romney
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 06:13 PM by Awsi Dooger
I posted this survey on another site, with a blend of right and left leaning posters. Among the posters who have taken the survey there, it's amazing how high Romney fares among people with balanced lists, ones alternating D and R in their order. Romney had 94% on two lists, one with Hillary on top and the other with Clark on top. Both of those posters had Guiliani a bit further down then a mixture of D and R all the way through. Here, we see nothing but D at the top then nothing but R at the bottom. Understandable and proper, but I'm not sure we're the best sample of who might fare best in a general election. I thought Romney had no chance at the nomination or general election six months ago, but more and more evidence indicates I was wrong. Right now, I hope they don't nominate him.

49. Hi, Awsi Dooger. Interesting observations on Mitt Romney.
I'm getting a little edgy about him myself, too, but I don't know if it's because he's becmoing more effective or because I never liked him in the first place & he's gotten more exposure.

Either way, I kind of hope he drops out somewhere in the early going.

55. I hated him in the first place
The most dangerous and despicable type of Republican in my book, someone who can feign moderate. Then you get him in office and the wheels crank straight right. Due to party pressure, if nothing else.

We were supposed to win the Mass gov race in '02, based on several prominent trends. So I paid attention when he defeated Shannon O'Brien rather handily. It couldn't be discounted. They were able to present Romney as an outsider and successful manager based on his stewardship of the Salt Lake City Olympics. No doubt the same tactics would be tried as a presidential nominee.

I agree, I hope he bombs in the early going but it's not going to happen, based on the showing in that straw poll, and basic handicapping. Rove supposedly is high on his candidacy.

35. I'm mainly a civil liberties voter so needless to say Repubs rate VERY low
There's no overlap whatsoever - the highest Republican for me, Huckabee, is still ten points below the lowest Democrat, Bayh.

Highest
(100%) 1: Sen. Russ Feingold (D)
(94%) 2: Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D)
(88%) 3: Ex-Gen. Wesley Clark (D)
(87%) 4: Sen. John Kerry (D)
(85%) 5: Sen. Joseph Biden (D)
(82%) 6: Ex-VP Al Gore (D)
(80%) 7: Ex-Sen. John Edwards (D)

Lowest
(32%) 19: Ex-Rep. Newt Gingrich (R)
(31%) 20: Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist (R)
(27%) 21: Sen. John McCain (R)
(26%) 22: Sen. George Allen (R)
(18%) 23: Rep. Tom Tancredo (R)
(14%) 24: Sen. Chuck Hagel (R)
(7%) 25: Sen. Sam Brownback (R)

Not exactly a nuanced quiz, but the outcome sounds about right.

I don't even know who Senator Brownback is, but apparently I don't like him one bit.

people's results, yes.

And I'm not surprised. Brownback is so far right he's off the chart.

44. They screwed up on the first question.
Edwards co-sponsored the IWR yet they call him "dovish"?

Kerry has a history of being against committing troops even though he did vote for IWR. (refer back to Iraq 1, for one thing.)

Both have claimed they regretted their vote on IWR (when Edwards said that did he mention that he regretted cosponsoring it?)

Sorry, to be so wrong on the first question tells me they still need to work on the construction of this "selector" a little bit.

53. A more useful study would ask four or five layers deep into each of
the issues, then match them to some kind of accumulative "total" match in the candidates' records.

This is on the brief side, I readily admit. But it looked like a fun diversion for a Thursday evening.

Plus, we're really kicking the blazes out of Sam Brownback!

I think I'd actually prefer Kucinich to Feingold, but I could live with either of them. McCain, as foul as he is, and he IS repugnant, would get my vote before Condoleeza Rice, one of the most utterly repellent public figures I have ever witnessed.

On some people's results, Christopher Dodd and Bill Richardson have done respectably well. I wonder if it means they have more appeal than I've given them credit for so far.

I may have to readjust some predictions as the months go on.

And McCain beats out Brownback by one position in your poll. I definitely like it that both those guys are last and next-to-last there.

Good goin'.

we're all coming out pretty blue.

And that's a good thing.

The red candidates are toward the bottom of most of these lists, with Sam Brownback leading for "least compatible" candidate.

85. They're three folks with fervent, loyal followers, and it's just my
opinion here, but I believe Senator Clinton, deemed the frontrunner for the 08 nomination by media and some others, will need a lot bigger push to finish ahead of your three there, plus maybe two or three others.

I could see her placing first, but with no more than a 28% share of the caucus vote in Iowa, but I think the more likely outcome is that she will finish no better than third or fourth, and possibly as low as fifth or sixth.

And the three people you've got there would be very likely contenders for those higher positions.
