State Senate backs boycott

By Steve Geissinger, SACRAMENTO BUREAU,

SACRAMENTO — Elected officials Thursday clashed over a planned nationwide protest Monday on federal immigration reform — The Great American Boycott 2006 — with the governor's aides and the state schools chief at odds with the Democratic majority in the state Senate.

The state Senate, in a vote along party lines, endorsed the boycott of schools, jobs and stores by immigrants and their supporters.

Supporters equated the debate over immigrant rights to the battles over slavery, women's suffrage, the internment of Japanese during World War II and the Vietnam War.

But Republican senators said the nonbinding resolution was misleading because it failed to mention a goal of the boycott was pressuring Congress to legalize millions of undocumented people.

Sen. Liz Figueroa, D-Fremont, who co-authored the Senate resolution, said her support stemmed from her roots. "My parents are immigrants from El Salvador. I remember going to school and not knowing a word of English," she said in an interview after the session.

"It is a historic time in the nation to acknowledge the contributions of immigrants to this state and nation," she said.

3. When is ANY legislative body ANYWHERE going to stand up
for us... for the dwindling Middle Class in this country! Many of us have fathers, grandfathers, brothers, husbands who fought for this country and who have paid taxes all their lives!

Why do WE continue to get shafted?

7. Forget it
We're wrong if we don't enthusiastically support people who have come here illegally to take our jobs at substandard wages, depressing the economy. If we say anything about it we're racist pigs, irregardless of what we've accomplished in our lifetimes.

I don't really care any longer, I'll say it this is BULLSHIT. As an American citizen I think we are getting screwed here. But what else is new, you all go ahead. I don't really give a fuck any more; I don't have any kids. poison the Earth, your children aren't going to have anything resembling an even break.

6. discussions of this issue in school are NOT in curriculum or on the
standardized tests :-) Instructional time is allocated to instruction of approved subject matter according to the state mandates.

hahahahahahaha

yesterday such discussions were improper and now they are encouraged.

the state board of ed oughta make up its mind if teachers are independent or not.
